Studying in the UK from Chennai: the short answer

A taught master’s in the UK takes twelve months and costs most Chennai students ₹40–60 lakh in total outside London. For the visa you need a CAS, English at B2 and £1,171 a month for nine months held for 28 days (£1,203 for applications made from 30 November 2026). Graduate visa applications from January 2027 give eighteen months of work.

Why do Indian students still choose the UK?

A UK master’s takes twelve months instead of two years, which cuts a full year of tuition and living costs out of the total. The Graduate visa then lets you work without an employer sponsoring you.

The decision cycle is also short. A standard Student visa decision from India takes about three weeks, and the £500 priority service usually decides within five working days, so a late offer can still make a September start.

The catch is the post-study window, which is shrinking. Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027 get eighteen months rather than two years, and that covers anyone starting a one-year master’s in September 2026 or later.

A one-year master’s outside London costs most Chennai students between ₹40 and ₹60 lakh in total, and tuition is the part that varies most. Living-cost figures below are the amounts UK Visas and Immigration asks you to show, which are a fair floor for a real budget.

When should you apply for the UK September intake?

For a September start, begin in the September or October of the year before. The January intake runs the same sequence four months later, with a smaller choice of courses.

  1. September–November, a year ahead

Shortlist, book IELTS or PTE if your universities need it, and start the SOP. Chevening and other government scholarships close in the autumn a year before you travel.

  2. October–February

Apply. Most universities decide on a rolling basis, so popular courses in computing, analytics and management fill well before their published deadlines.

  3. January–April

Offers arrive. Accept one firm choice, pay the deposit if the university asks for one, and start the education loan so the sanction is in hand before the visa.

  4. May–June

Put the maintenance money in place and leave it untouched for at least 28 consecutive days. Meet any offer conditions, such as final transcripts.

  5. June–August

The university issues your CAS. You can apply for the visa up to six months before the course starts, and a standard decision from outside the UK takes about three weeks.

  6. August–September

Accommodation, flights, forex and the pre-departure briefing. On a course longer than six months you can arrive up to a month before it starts.

How does the UK student visa work?

The UK Student visa is a rules-based application: the university sponsors you with a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), and you prove money and English against fixed thresholds.

  1. Unconditional offer and CAS

The CAS is an electronic reference the university issues once you have met every offer condition and, usually, paid a deposit. You cannot apply without it.

  2. Show the money

Unpaid first-year tuition plus £1,171 a month for up to nine months outside London, or £1,529 in London, held for 28 consecutive days. The 28-day period must end within 31 days of your application. For applications made on or after 30 November 2026 the monthly figures rise to £1,203 and £1,570. A loan counts if the evidence comes from the lender.

  3. Prove your English

Degree-level study needs English equivalent to CEFR B2. Many universities assess this themselves, often from an English-medium degree; otherwise you need a Secure English Language Test.

  4. Apply online and pay

The application fee from outside the UK is £558. The immigration health surcharge of £776 per year of visa is paid upfront, at the same time.

  5. Biometrics and decision

Fingerprints and a photograph at the visa application centre. Standard decisions take about three weeks; priority (£500) usually five working days; super priority (£1,000) usually the next working day.

How we handle it

We prepare the financial file and rehearse the credibility questions before you submit. The two faults we are asked to fix most often are money that dipped below the threshold during the 28 days and a loan letter in a form the caseworker cannot verify.

Both are fixed before submission, not after a refusal. We also check the CAS itself, because a wrong course date or fee on it will carry straight into the decision.

Student visa assistance

Scholarships worth applying for

  • Chevening, fully funded, autumn deadline
  • Commonwealth Shared Scholarships
  • GREAT Scholarships, India cohort
  • University merit awards, typically a few thousand pounds

Can you work in the UK while studying and after?

During term, students on a degree-level course can usually work up to 20 hours a week, and full time in the university’s official vacations. Your exact limit is printed on your visa.

After you graduate you can switch to the Graduate visa without a job offer. It lasts two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and eighteen months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. The fee is £937, plus a health surcharge of £1,035 for each year.

In practice, anyone starting a one-year master’s in September 2026 or later should plan on eighteen months. That is enough to put a first UK job on your CV and move to a sponsored work visa if an employer wants you. It is not long enough to spend the first six months deciding what to do.

Figures checked 24 September 2026 against GOV.UK: Knowledge of English; GOV.UK: Faster decisions from outside the UK; GOV.UK: Graduate visa; GOV.UK: Bringing family members. Rules change, so confirm them yourself on the day you apply.

Is the UK right for you?

It suits you if

  • You want a recognised master’s in a year and to start earning sooner.
  • Your average is around 60% or above and you want a wide choice of universities.
  • You prefer a visa decided on documents, with fixed financial rules, rather than an interview.

Think again if

  • You need a long post-study runway to repay a large loan. Canada and Australia give more time.
  • You plan to bring a spouse on a taught master’s. Since January 2024 that is limited to research degrees and PhDs.
  • You want a funded, research-heavy degree. The US usually does that better.
