Study abroad destinations for Indian students

Six countries we send Chennai students to, compared on what each one actually costs, how long you can work afterwards, and who it suits. The UK is where we place the most students. Each of the others is on the list because it does one thing better than the rest.

Short answer

Which country should an Indian student choose?

Choose by budget and by what you need after the degree. The UK is the fastest route to a master’s at twelve months. Canada and Australia give the longest work rights. A German public university costs the least in total. The USA has the highest ceiling for strong technical profiles, and Dubai is the closest to home.

How to choose the right country

Four questions settle it for most families. We ask them in this order in every first consultation.

  1. What is your total budget, including living costs?

Start here, because it rules countries out before anything else does. Under about ₹30 lakh all in, the realistic options are a German public university, a one-year master’s at a Dubai branch campus at the lower end of its fee range, or a one-year Canadian college programme. Between ₹40 and ₹60 lakh, a one-year UK master’s outside London fits. The USA and a two-year Australian master’s usually need more, unless an assistantship or scholarship closes the gap.

  2. Do you want to work abroad after the degree?

If the plan is several years of overseas experience, post-study work rights matter more than the ranking of the university. Australia gives Indian master’s graduates three years, Canada up to three on a post-graduation work permit, and STEM graduates in the USA up to three on OPT with its extension. The UK Graduate visa drops to eighteen months for applications from 1 January 2027.

  3. How much time can you give it?

A UK taught master’s is twelve months, so you are earning again a year sooner than on a two-year course. That shorter course is often what makes the UK cheaper in total even when its fees look higher. Canada, Australia, Europe and the USA mostly run master’s degrees over eighteen months to two years.

  4. How strong is your profile?

Marks, test scores and work experience decide which universities are realistic, and that differs by country. The USA rewards strong quantitative profiles and research fit. The UK and Canada have a wider range of universities that take students in the 60s. We look at your marksheets before recommending a country, not after.

Not sure where you fit? The free profile evaluation takes five questions, and a consultant comes back with the countries and courses you are competitive for and what each will cost.

Questions families ask about choosing a country

Which is the cheapest country to study abroad from India?

Germany, at a public university that charges no tuition, where you mainly pay a semester contribution and living costs. Some, such as TUM in Munich, now charge non-EU students, so check the programme. Over a full degree that can come to about half the cost of a single year in the UK. Dubai and Canadian college diplomas are the next cheapest for many Chennai families.

Which country gives the longest post-study work visa for Indian students?

Australia gives Indian master’s graduates three years of post-study work under the India–Australia trade agreement. Canada gives up to three years on a post-graduation work permit, depending on course length and field. STEM graduates in the USA can work up to three years on OPT and its 24-month extension.

Is the UK or Canada better for Indian students?

The UK suits you if you want a recognised master’s quickly: twelve months, then an eighteen-month Graduate visa for applications from January 2027. Canada suits you if you want a longer work runway and are weighing permanent residence, which is possible but never guaranteed. Canada’s college route now depends heavily on choosing an eligible field.

How much does it cost to study abroad from India in 2026?

For a master’s, most Chennai families spend between about ₹26 lakh (Dubai, or a year in Canada) and ₹60 lakh (a UK master’s outside London) including living costs. A two-year master’s in the USA or Australia can reach ₹1 crore. The destination pages break each figure down and show the rates used.

Which intake is best for studying abroad?

September (called Fall in the USA) has the widest choice of courses and scholarships in the UK, Canada, Europe and the USA. January works for the UK and Canada with fewer courses. Australia’s main intakes are February and July, which suits students who have missed a September deadline.

Do I need IELTS to study abroad?

Usually, but not always, and the university’s requirement and the visa’s requirement are separate. Some UK universities assess English themselves, for example from an English-medium degree, while Canada’s post-study work permit needs its own test. Our IELTS or PTE guide sets out what each country accepts.
