Study in Sweden and Europe from Chennai
Europe is where we send students who want a strong degree without a UK price tag. Sweden, Ireland and Germany all teach master’s programmes in English, and many German public universities charge little or no tuition.

Studying in Sweden and Europe from Chennai: the short answer
For a two-year master’s taught in English at a lower total cost, look at Germany, Sweden and Ireland. At a German public university the full degree can cost about half a single UK year. Sweden charges tuition but gives a year to look for work afterwards, and Ireland gives master’s graduates up to two.
Why is Europe the value option for Indian students?
Most public universities in Germany charge only a semester contribution, which DAAD puts at roughly €70–430. Some now charge non-EU students tuition, including TUM at €4,000–6,000 a semester, so we check each programme rather than assume.
Sweden does charge tuition, but a Nordic master’s such as Jönköping’s costs SEK 60,000–85,000 a semester, and the country lets graduates stay up to a year to look for work.
Ireland is the middle path: English-speaking, up to two years of post-study work for master’s graduates, and a large multinational employer base in Dublin and Cork.
- Course length
- 1–2 years (master’s)
- Post-study work
- 12–24 months, varies by country
- Main intakes
- August/September, some January
- Sweden, funds to show
- SEK 10,656 a month
How much does it cost to study in Europe from India?
A two-year master’s at a German public university costs about ₹27 lakh in total, the same two years in Sweden roughly double, and a one-year Irish master’s sits in between. The living figures below are the minimums each government asks you to prove.
| Item | Local / year | INR approx. |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition, Sweden (Jönköping, a year) | SEK 120,000–170,000 | ₹12–16.5 L |

The same two years at Jönköping, at SEK 85,000 a semester, comes to about SEK 597,000, or ₹58 lakh, with living costs and the permit fee. A one-year Irish master’s comes to roughly ₹24–38 lakh with the €10,000 living minimum, and Dublin rents push the real figure higher.

When should you apply to study in Europe?
Most European master’s programmes start in August or September, and each country runs its own calendar. Start a year ahead, because the appointment for the permit is often the real bottleneck.
September–November, a year ahead
Shortlist by country and programme, book IELTS, and check which German universities take applications through uni-assist.
October–January
Sweden’s main application round for the autumn intake closes in January; check the date on universityadmissions.se. Irish universities read on a rolling basis.
January–May
German winter-semester deadlines at many universities fall in the spring and early summer. Swedish results arrive in the spring.
April–June
Pay the first Swedish tuition instalment, open the German blocked account, and book the visa or permit appointment as early as the system allows.
July–August
Permits, flights and accommodation. Housing in Dublin, Munich and Stockholm needs searching early.
How do student visas work in Sweden, Germany and Ireland?
Each country runs its own residence permit rather than a single European visa, and each asks for the money in a different form.
Sweden: tuition first, then the permit
You are only finally admitted once you pay the first tuition instalment. Then apply online to the Migration Agency, showing SEK 10,656 a month for the permit period, and pay the SEK 1,500 fee.
Germany: blocked account and national visa
Open a blocked account holding the amount the German Missions in India currently require, €11,904 for the first year with no more than €992 released a month, then apply for a national student visa at the mission for your region. An education loan is additional to the blocked account, not a substitute.
Ireland: study visa, then Stamp 2
Indian nationals apply for a study visa and show the finance requirement, €10,000 for a one-year course. You register for a Stamp 2 permission after you arrive.
Book the appointment early
Across all three, the appointment slot is what most often delays a Chennai applicant. We book as soon as your documents allow.
How we handle it
We handle the country-specific file, the blocked account or maintenance proof, and the appointment booking, which is often the real bottleneck for Chennai applicants.
Sweden and Germany update their money figures regularly, so we recalculate them for the year you apply rather than reuse last year’s file.
