IELTS or PTE for Indian students: which test your university and your visa will accept

Short answer

Neither test is easier. Universities in the UK, Australia, Canada and the USA widely accept both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic, so choose on your own practice scores. The visa is where they differ: UK courses below degree level need the UKVI version, and Canada's post-study work permit needs IELTS General Training or PTE Core.

Nearly every student who sits down in our Egmore office asks the same thing first: which is easier, IELTS or PTE? It is a fair question, and the answer is neither, in general. The question that saves money is a different one. Which test does your university accept, and which does your visa accept? Those are two separate bars, set by two separate bodies, and the same score can clear one and miss the other.

Below is where the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA stand on 24 September 2026, what separates the two tests in the exam hall, what they cost in India, where to sit them in Chennai and how to pick one.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?

Neither test is easier across the board. Both measure listening, reading, writing and speaking, and Pearson’s 2025 study judged them similar enough to publish a score-by-score comparison. What differs is the format, and a format that suits one student can sink another.

PTE Academic is taken entirely on a computer, lasts about two hours and is scored by Pearson’s AI system, which Pearson says is combined with human expertise. You speak into a headset, usually in a room where other candidates are speaking at the same time. IELTS takes about 2 hours 45 minutes, and the speaking section is a live conversation with a certified examiner. On computer-delivered IELTS in India, IDP runs that conversation as a video call with the examiner, in a quiet room.

Over the years a pattern shows up, though it is a tendency and not a rule. Students who type quickly, stay calm against an on-screen clock and tense up in front of a stranger often settle into PTE. Students who speak well in conversation, like to plan an essay by hand, or lose their thread when a microphone cuts them off tend to do better in IELTS. Most students cannot tell which group they are in until they try both.

So try both. Take a timed practice paper of each under real conditions, a few days apart, and compare. Your own two scores are better evidence than anyone’s opinion, ours included.

What is the difference between IELTS and PTE?

IELTS has four separately timed sections; PTE has three parts, and speaking and writing are tested together in the first. Beyond that, the differences that matter are who scores your speaking, which versions exist for visas, what each one is not accepted for, and how quickly you can sit it again. The gap in results speed, once the main selling point of PTE, has largely closed.

The UK visa versions have the same content and scoring as the standard tests. What changes is the centre, the security and how the result reaches the Home Office.

Does the UK accept both IELTS and PTE?

Yes. IELTS for UKVI and PTE Academic UKVI are both on the Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs), and Pearson states that virtually all UK universities accept PTE Academic. The catch is that the university’s requirement and the visa’s requirement are two different things.

The university sets its own English requirement for each course, and it is usually the higher bar. Something like 6.5 overall with no component below 6.0 is typical for a taught master’s, and the PTE figure the university prints beside it is the one that counts. The Home Office separately sets a floor for the visa: CEFR level B2 in all four skills for degree-level study, and B1 below degree level.

On the Home Office list, B2 is 5.5 in each of the four components of IELTS for UKVI, or 59 in each component of PTE Academic UKVI. B1 is 4.0 in each for IELTS for UKVI and 43 in each for PTE Academic UKVI.

For degree-level study, a university that is a Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself. That means it can accept the standard IELTS Academic or PTE Academic, or other evidence such as an English-medium degree, provided the level is still equivalent to B2. It records how it assessed you on your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. This is how some UK universities admit Indian students without IELTS or PTE, for example on a strong Class 12 English mark, with each university setting its own board and percentage. Below degree level, such as most foundation courses, there is no such flexibility: you need an approved SELT taken at an approved centre.

Which English tests are approved for a UK student visa?

Four providers offer tests that cover all four skills for a UK Student visa. The Home Office last updated its SELT guidance on 21 September 2026, and on that date the approved four-skill tests taken outside the UK were:

  • IELTS for UKVI (IELTS SELT Consortium)
  • PTE Academic UKVI (Pearson)
  • LanguageCert Academic SELT and LanguageCert General SELT
  • Skills for English UKVI, four-component version (PSI Services)

IELTS Life Skills and PTE Home are on the list too, but they test speaking and listening only, for other visa routes, and do not meet a four-skill requirement. Results are valid for two years from the date the test is awarded.

IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Academic: which do you need?

You need IELTS for UKVI if your UK course is below degree level, or if your university specifically asks for a SELT. For most degree-level courses, the standard IELTS Academic is enough, provided the university lists it. The same logic applies to PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI.

The two are separate bookings, and this catches people every year. Pearson says PTE Academic UKVI has the same content, format and scoring as PTE Academic, but adds a Unique Reference Number used in the visa application, and must be taken at an authorised centre. IELTS for UKVI is taken at a designated UKVI centre with an extra layer of security, and since IELTS moved away from paper it is offered only in the fully digital format, so the handwritten Writing option does not apply to it.

Students book the standard sitting because the name looks close enough, score well, and then learn the result cannot be used for the purpose they needed. There is no conversion afterwards. You sit it again.

Confirm the exact version your course and your visa route require before you pay the fee, not after you get the score.

IELTS or PTE for Canada?

For the study permit itself, IRCC does not set a language test. Your college or university does, and most list both IELTS Academic and PTE Academic. The Student Direct Stream, which gave Indian applicants a fixed English score to meet, closed on 8 November 2024, and applications now go through the regular study permit stream.

The test that surprises families comes after graduation. To get a Post-Graduation Work Permit, anyone who applied for their study permit on or after 1 November 2024 must prove Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in all four skills after a university degree, or CLB 5 after a college programme. For English, IRCC accepts only CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core. IELTS Academic and PTE Academic are not on that list, and the result must be less than two years old when you apply.

In IRCC’s table, CLB 7 is 6.0 in each skill of IELTS General Training. For PTE Core it starts at 60 in reading, 69 in writing, 60 in listening and 68 in speaking. CLB 5 is 4.0 in reading and 5.0 in the other three skills of IELTS General Training, and starts at 42 reading, 51 writing, 39 listening and 51 speaking in PTE Core.

The same three English tests are the only ones IRCC accepts for permanent residence through Express Entry, where the result must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you apply. For a student who hopes to stay on in Canada, the general test is not optional. It is part of the plan.

A Canada plan therefore usually means two tests: an academic one for admission now and a general one towards the end of the course. If one format already suits you, stay in the same family. IELTS Academic now and IELTS General Training later, or PTE Academic now and PTE Core later, means you only learn one format. Our Canada page covers the field of study rules that also apply to college graduates.

IELTS or PTE for Australia?

Australia accepts both, for admission and for the Student visa (subclass 500), and Home Affairs publishes a PTE figure next to every IELTS one. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the department accepts nine tests, all of which must be sat at a secure test centre. It does not accept tests delivered entirely online, such as IELTS Online.

Australian Student visa minimum overall scores for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025
Student visa (subclass 500)IELTS AcademicPTE Academic
Standard minimum6.047
With at least 10 weeks of ELICOS, or a Foundation or eligible Pathway programme5.539
With at least 20 weeks of ELICOS5.031

Many pages still quote PTE 50 for direct entry. That figure applies to tests taken on or before 6 August 2025. The test must usually have been taken within the two years before you lodge the visa application; for applicants at the streamlined evidence level who are asked for proof, the two years run back from the decision date instead. These are the visa minimums, and the university’s own requirement is separate and usually higher, often with a minimum in each component. More on the country is on our Australia page.

IELTS or PTE for the USA?

The United States has no government list of approved English tests for student visas, so the question is entirely one for the university. Pearson says PTE Academic is accepted widely across the US, including by all Ivy League universities. American admissions requirements were long built around TOEFL, though, and acceptance can differ between a university’s graduate departments. Check that your exact programme names the test you plan to take before you book it. Our USA page has the rest of the picture.

How do PTE scores compare with IELTS bands?

The official comparison is Pearson’s 2025 concordance study, based on 1,522 people from India, China, Australia and the UK who took both tests within 90 days of each other.

Pearson 2025 concordance between IELTS Academic and PTE Academic overall scores
IELTS AcademicPTE Academic overall
5.539 to 46
6.047 to 54
6.555 to 62
7.063 to 70
7.571 to 78
8.079 to 85
8.586 to 89
9.090

The study also compares individual skills, which matters because most offers set a minimum per component. It places IELTS 6.0 at 47 to 52 in PTE listening, 48 to 53 in reading, 54 to 65 in speaking and 51 to 59 in writing. IELTS 6.5 sits at 53 to 57 in listening, 54 to 58 in reading, 66 to 75 in speaking and 60 to 68 in writing.

Use the table to judge which test you are closer to passing, not to convert a requirement yourself. Universities publish their own PTE numbers, and they do not always match the concordance. The UK visa list is not based on it either: it maps each test to CEFR levels, which is why visa-level B2 is 5.5 on IELTS for UKVI but 59 on PTE Academic UKVI.

Where do students actually fall short?

Almost nobody misses the overall score. They miss one component. A 6.5 overall with writing at 5.5 does not satisfy a requirement of 6.0 in every component, and the offer stays conditional no matter how strong the other three are.

For students coming through this office, writing is the component that most often comes back short, in either test. It is also the one that improves most with targeted practice rather than another attempt at the whole paper. Look at your weakest component before you rebook, not your average.

How much do IELTS and PTE cost in India in 2026?

On 24 September 2026, IDP lists IELTS Academic and General Training at ₹19,000 in every Indian city, whether you type or handwrite the Writing section, and IELTS for UKVI at ₹19,250. Pearson lists PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core in India at ₹18,900 each.

IDP also lists IELTS One Skill Retake, which lets you resit a single section, at ₹12,650. Australia’s approved list names IELTS results with a One Skill Retake; check with each university and visa route before you rely on one anywhere else. The few hundred rupees between the two main tests should not decide anything. A second sitting costs far more than the gap.

Where can you take IELTS and PTE in Chennai?

Chennai has centres for the standard tests and for the UK visa versions of both. The Home Office centre list dated 18 September 2026 shows IELTS for UKVI at four Chennai locations, in T. Nagar, Kilpauk, Egmore and Adyar; PTE Academic UKVI at the Pearson Professional Centre off Anna Salai; and LanguageCert at a Prometric centre in the city.

For the standard tests, IDP’s computer-delivered IELTS centres in the city are in Egmore, near our office, and in Adyar. Pearson’s centre finder lists PTE at its Pearson Professional Centre off Anna Salai. Book well ahead of any university deadline, and leave room for a resit before it.

How long are IELTS and PTE scores valid?

Both are treated as valid for two years. Pearson states a PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the test date, and IELTS recommends treating results as valid for two years. For UK visas, the Home Office rule is two years from the date the result is awarded. Australia usually wants the test taken within the two years before you lodge, and Canada’s work permit wants a result less than two years old on the day you apply.

Universities set their own window, which is often two years but not always. If your score is approaching two years old, check the expiry against the date the application will be assessed, not the date you start filling it in.

Is the UK replacing IELTS for UKVI with a new Home Office test?

Not yet. The Home Office is procuring a new test, the Home Office English Language Test (HOELT), but as of 21 September 2026 its guidance still lists IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI and the others above, with no switch-over date. The IELTS partners said on 17 March 2026 that they would not bid for the HOELT contract, while staying committed to working with UKVI. If you are planning a 2027 start, check the gov.uk list again in the month you book.

How do you decide between IELTS and PTE?

Settle acceptance first, then choose on your own practice scores. In practice:

  • UK degree, Australia, or a university that lists both: either test. Take the one where your practice score is higher, especially in your weakest component.
  • UK course below degree level, including most foundation years: the UKVI version of whichever test you choose, at an approved centre.
  • Canada: either for admission, but plan for IELTS General Training or PTE Core later for the work permit, and consider staying with the same test family.
  • USA: whichever your exact programme names. Do not assume.
  • You think better with a pen: IELTS, with Writing on Paper, unless you need the UKVI version.
  • You freeze when speaking to an examiner: sit a PTE practice test before deciding.

What if your score falls short?

A near miss on one component is usually fixed by working on that component, not by switching tests. PTE lets you book again as soon as your scores arrive, and IELTS has no limit on attempts, so the real constraint is the university’s deadline for meeting conditions. Many universities also run pre-sessional English courses for students slightly below the requirement, and the offer letter will say whether that route is open and what score it needs.

A UK pre-sessional course sits below degree level, so its visa threshold is B1, lower than the B2 needed for the degree. Ask the university how the pre-sessional and the degree will be sponsored, because that decides which English evidence the visa application needs.

What should you check before you book?

Seven checks, in this order, save most students a second fee.

  • Write down each university’s requirement: overall score and minimum per component, for the test you plan to take.
  • Confirm which tests each university accepts, in writing if the website is unclear.
  • For the UK, confirm whether your course is degree level or below, which decides whether you need the UKVI version.
  • For Canada, note that the work permit after graduation needs a general test, not an academic one.
  • Book at a test centre, not the at-home version, if a visa depends on it.
  • Check the result will still be valid on the date your application is assessed.
  • Leave time for a resit before the university’s deadline for meeting conditions.

The English condition is one part of the file. If you are still comparing countries, our destination guides set out each one’s costs and visa rules. For the UK, the statement of purpose and the financial requirement matter just as much, and our UK page covers the rest. If you want someone to check the test against your shortlist before you pay for it, a free profile evaluation is the place to start, and course selection and visa assistance are free for students too.

Questions students ask us

Is PTE easier than IELTS for Indian students?

Neither is easier in general: both test the same four skills, and Pearson's 2025 study found their scores comparable band by band. PTE is fully on computer and scored mainly by AI, which suits fast typists and students who are nervous speaking to a person. IELTS speaking is a live conversation with an examiner, which suits confident speakers. A timed practice test of each is the only reliable way to know which suits you.

Is PTE accepted for a UK student visa?

Yes. PTE Academic UKVI is on the Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests, and B2 on it is 59 in each of the four skills. For degree-level study, a university that is a Higher Education Provider can also accept the standard PTE Academic and assess your English itself. Below degree level you must take the UKVI version at an approved centre.

Can I use IELTS Academic or PTE Academic for a Canadian PGWP?

No. For the Post-Graduation Work Permit, IRCC accepts only CELPIP-General, IELTS General Training and PTE Core for English, plus TEF Canada and TCF Canada for French. University graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills and college graduates need CLB 5, and the result must be less than two years old when you apply. Your Academic score from admission will not count.

What PTE score is equal to IELTS 6.5?

Pearson's 2025 concordance places IELTS 6.5 at PTE Academic 55 to 62 overall, and IELTS 7.0 at 63 to 70. Universities publish their own PTE requirements, which do not always match the concordance, so use the figure on the course page rather than converting one yourself.

What is the IELTS and PTE exam fee in India in 2026?

On 24 September 2026, IDP lists IELTS Academic and General Training at ₹19,000 and IELTS for UKVI at ₹19,250, the same in every city. Pearson lists PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core in India at ₹18,900 each. Fees change, so confirm the price on the booking page before you pay.

Can I study in the UK without IELTS or PTE?

Sometimes, for degree-level courses. A UK university that is a Higher Education Provider can assess your English itself, and some accept a strong Class 12 English mark or an English-medium degree instead of a test. Each university sets its own board and percentage. Courses below degree level, including most foundation years, still need an approved SELT such as IELTS for UKVI or PTE Academic UKVI.

Which is better for Canada PR, IELTS or PTE?

Either IELTS General Training or PTE Core, because IRCC accepts only those two and CELPIP-General in English for Express Entry. IELTS Academic and PTE Academic do not count. The result must be less than two years old both when you create your profile and when you apply, so time the test with that in mind.

Which test does the Australian student visa accept?

Both. For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, the Student visa minimum is IELTS Academic 6.0 or PTE Academic 47 overall, falling to 5.5 or 39 with at least 10 weeks of ELICOS or a Foundation or eligible Pathway programme, and to 5.0 or 31 with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS. The test must be taken at a secure centre, and your university will usually ask for more.

Can I take IELTS or PTE online at home for a visa?

Not for the UK or Australia. UK visa tests must be taken at an approved centre, and Australia's Home Affairs does not accept any test delivered entirely online, including IELTS Online. Some universities accept at-home tests for admission, but if a visa depends on the result, book a test centre.

How many times can I take IELTS or PTE?

IDP says there is no limit on how many times you can take IELTS, and IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit a single section for ₹12,650 in India. Pearson lets you book your next PTE test only once your previous scores have arrived, and caps attempts at 12 in any 12-month window. Check that the university and visa route accept a One Skill Retake before relying on one.

How long are IELTS and PTE scores valid?

Two years in most cases. Pearson says a PTE Academic score is valid for two years from the test date, IELTS recommends a two-year limit, and UK visa test results are valid for two years from the date awarded. Universities set their own window, so check it against the date your application will be assessed.
