Study in the USA from Chennai

The USA has the highest cost and the highest ceiling. For a strong technical profile with a good GRE and clear research interest, its research funding, faculty depth and post-graduation earning potential are hard to match.

Studying in the USA from Chennai: the short answer

The USA suits strong technical profiles with secure funding. A two-year master’s at a public university costs roughly ₹62 lakh to ₹1.06 crore before any assistantship, and STEM graduates can work for up to three years on OPT and its 24-month extension. The F-1 interview is the step that decides it.

Why the USA, and who should not bother?

Optional Practical Training gives twelve months of work rights, and a 24-month extension for STEM fields, so a computer science or engineering master’s can mean three years of US work experience. Assistantships and tuition waivers can also cut the real cost dramatically.

It is the wrong choice if your academics are weak or your funding is uncertain. Visa refusals are far more common than in the UK or Canada, and a poorly funded application will be refused regardless of your admit.

Your I-20 states the university’s estimate for the first year, and the consular officer expects to see that funding in liquid or sanctioned form. A teaching or research assistantship can remove most of the tuition line; do not plan on one until it is in writing. A separate $250 visa integrity fee has been legislated and some consular posts have begun charging it.

When should you apply for the US Fall intake?

For Fall, start twelve to fourteen months ahead. Funding deadlines come before admission deadlines, and interview slots are the bottleneck at the end.

  1. January–June, the year before

GRE if your programmes want it, TOEFL or IELTS, and a shortlist. For research programmes, read faculty work and write to potential advisers.

  2. September–January

Applications. Assistantship and fellowship consideration often closes in December and January, earlier than the final deadline.

  3. February–April

Admits and funding offers. Decide, then send the university the financial documents it needs to issue your I-20.

  4. April–June

I-20 issued. Pay the SEVIS fee, complete the DS-160 and book the interview as early as slots allow.

  5. June–August

    Interview, visa, flights and accommodation.

How does the US F-1 student visa work?

An F-1 visa is decided at a short consular interview, on whether your study plan, your funding and your intentions hold together.

  1. Form I-20

Issued by an SEVP-certified school after you accept the admit and show funding for at least the first year.

  2. SEVIS fee

The I-901 SEVIS fee is $350 for most F-1 students, paid online before the interview.

  3. DS-160 and application fee

The online application, plus the $185 visa application fee, which is not refunded if you are refused.

  4. Interview

At the US consulate. Expect a few minutes on why this university, how it is funded, and what you will do afterwards.

  5. Visa issued

Your passport comes back with the visa. You travel with the I-20 and your funding documents in your hand luggage.

How we handle it

After your I-20 you pay the SEVIS fee, book a consular interview, and demonstrate funding for at least the first year plus the intent to return. The interview is short and decided on your answers, not your paperwork.

We prepare you for the interview specifically: why this university, how it is funded, what you will do afterwards. This is the single highest-leverage thing we do for US applicants.

Can you work in the USA while studying and after?

On an F-1 visa you can work on campus for up to 20 hours a week while school is in session. Off-campus work during your studies needs specific authorisation and is limited.

After graduating, post-completion OPT usually gives twelve months of work related to your field. STEM graduates can then apply for a 24-month extension, with an employer enrolled in E-Verify and at least 20 hours of work a week.

OPT is not a work visa. Staying longer means an employer sponsoring you for one, and that process is competitive and outside your control.

Is the USA right for you?

It suits you if

  • You have a strong academic record in a technical field and a clear reason for a specific programme.
  • Your funding is secure, or you are competitive for an assistantship.
  • You want the highest salary ceiling and are prepared to compete for it.

Think again if

  • Your academics are weak or you have a patchy record you cannot explain.
  • Your funding depends on part-time work or a loan that is not yet sanctioned.
  • You want certainty. The interview outcome and post-OPT work visas are both uncertain.
