Short answer

After a BTech, the main MS routes are a two-year MS in the USA (about ₹85 lakh, with up to three years of work for STEM degrees), a low-tuition master's in Germany (about ₹27 lakh), a one-year MSc in the UK (about ₹50 lakh), or a master's in Canada or Australia, each with three years of post-study work.

If you are in the final year of a BTech, or a year or two into a job, and thinking about an MS abroad, October is when the main decisions need making. Among the programmes below, the first US deadlines for autumn 2027 fall in November and December, and late registration for GATE 2027 closes on 12 October 2026.

I have advised students on studying abroad since 1999, and many of the students I advise are engineering graduates. Below are the main options country by country, what each costs in rupees, whether you need the GRE, how funding works, and how an MS abroad compares with an MTech through GATE. Each official statement was checked on its source page on 5 October 2026 and links to it.

Which country is best for an MS after BTech?

It depends on your budget and where you want to work. Germany is the cheapest two-year route, the USA gives STEM graduates up to three years of work, the UK and Ireland are quickest at one year, and Canada and Australia give three years of post-study work. The main choices are a two-year MS in the USA, a low-tuition master’s at a German public university, a one-year MSc in the UK or Ireland, a course-based MEng or research MASc in Canada, or a two-year master’s in Australia. They differ most on total cost, how long you can stay to work afterwards and whether you need the GRE.

The costs are worked through in our cost of studying abroad guide, and the work rights and salary thresholds in is studying abroad worth it. German tuition varies by university, as the Germany section below explains.

Is the GRE required for an MS in the USA in 2027?

Often not. For autumn 2027, Georgia Tech’s MS in Computer Science, Illinois’s Siebel School, Purdue ECE, Northeastern’s Khoury College and UC San Diego CSE do not require the GRE, and Berkeley EECS does not accept it for its research programmes. Carnegie Mellon strongly recommends it. Policies differ between departments of one university, and some German programmes, such as TUM’s, still ask for it.

In our experience, where it is optional, a strong score can still help an application with a modest percentage. The GRE General Test takes about 1 hour and 58 minutes, and ETS lists the fee at $249, about ₹23,900, including in India.

Is an MS in the USA after BTech worth it?

It can be, if you plan to work there. It is one of the most expensive routes, at about ₹85 lakh, but STEM graduates can then work for up to three years. OPT (Optional Practical Training) is the US work period after study, and the Department of Homeland Security’s STEM list includes Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, which qualify for a 24-month STEM extension on top of 12 months of OPT. Eligibility depends on the code of your US degree, not your BTech branch. Staying longer depends on the H-1B, the main US work visa, whose selection now favours higher-paid jobs; our worth-it guide covers that, and the $100,000 H-1B payment, which a June 2026 court ruling has set aside for now.

Do not count on funding. Georgia Tech’s ECE department says GTA/GRA funding is very limited and is not guaranteed (teaching and research assistantships, paid part-time posts) and that MS students should have another plan. Where assistantships exist, Illinois explains that they pay a stipend for work and that tuition waivers are generally provided for posts of 25% to 67% of full time. Plan to fund the whole degree, and treat an assistantship as a bonus.

Choose by the modules, not the course name. A data science, AI or VLSI master’s can sit in the computer science, electrical engineering or statistics department, with different prerequisites. Some US universities also offer a professional, course-based master’s alongside the research MS, so compare length, cost and the STEM code on the I-20 before you apply.

US deadlines for autumn 2027

Can you do an MS in Germany after BTech?

Yes, and it is the lowest-cost two-year route, at about ₹27.3 lakh for two years at a public university with living costs. Tuition depends on the university. RWTH Aachen says it continues its policy of not charging additional tuition fees for students from outside the EU, while TUM has charged new students from outside the EU since the winter semester of 2024/25, usually €4,000 or €6,000 a semester for a master’s.

Competitive programmes ask for a strong converted grade, often 2.5 or better on the German scale, where 1.0 is the top grade, and some want the GRE or GATE, as TUM’s MSc in Informatics does. Indian applicants generally need an APS certificate, which verifies their academic documents, and €11,904 a year in a blocked account, a German account you draw from monthly; that is the 2026 figure, usually revised each year. Our cheapest countries guide covers these costs, and our percentage guide shows how your marks convert. After graduating, you can stay up to 18 months to look for work.

MEng or MASc in Canada: which is better after BTech?

They are different degrees. At the University of Toronto, the MEng is course-based and self-funded, with optional co-op or practicum, while the MASc is research-intensive under a supervisor and often a stepping stone to a PhD. The funding gap is large: Toronto’s engineering units support all MASc students, who receive at least $20,000 a year for two years after tuition and fees, in Canadian dollars. Research places are competitive, and many Canadian universities, such as UBC, ask for a first class for a master’s; our percentage guide has the details. Either degree can qualify for a three-year post-graduation work permit, which IRCC gives master’s graduates of a programme of at least eight months, provided you meet its other conditions, such as full-time study.

Is a one-year MSc in the UK a good option after BTech?

It is the quickest route, at about ₹50.5 lakh for a year outside London, and the Graduate visa then gives 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027. Computer science and electronics graduates usually apply to specialist MSc courses in their field. Graduates of other branches can take a conversion master’s: the University of Birmingham’s MSc in Computer Science asks for a 2:1 in any subject other than computing (a 2:1 is an upper second class). Our UK page covers the visa and work rules.

Is Australia a good option for an MS after BTech?

It suits students who want three years of post-study work, but it is the most expensive option here, at about ₹97.9 lakh for two years in Melbourne. Indian graduates of a master’s get three years on the post-study 485 visa, the same length as Canada’s work permit and the US STEM route. If you may later want to work as an engineer there, Engineers Australia recognises degrees through the Washington Accord, which India joined in 2014; its announcement says recognition applies to programmes on the NBA’s Tier I register, for graduates from 2014 (the National Board of Accreditation’s register of programmes accredited at the Washington Accord level), and its skills assessment requires the programme to be fully accredited.

Can you do an MS in computer science after a mechanical or civil BTech?

Yes. In the UK, conversion master’s courses such as Birmingham’s are designed for graduates from other subjects. In the USA, check each programme’s prerequisites: some consider graduates of other branches who can show programming and mathematics, so relevant courses, projects or work experience in software help. If you would rather stay in your own branch, the US STEM list also covers civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, though the extension depends on the code of your US degree, not your BTech.

Should you do an MS abroad or an MTech in India through GATE?

It depends on where you want to work. GATE scores can be used for admission to postgraduate and doctoral programmes, with possible financial assistance, in MoE-supported institutions (institutions supported by India’s Ministry of Education), at a small fraction of the cost of an MS abroad. GATE 2027 runs on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, with results on 19 March 2027, and registration with a late fee closes on 12 October 2026. IIT Madras adds that qualifying does not guarantee admission or a scholarship. In our view, if your career is in India, an MTech is often the better value. If you want to work abroad, an MS abroad comes with the right to stay and work in that country after graduating, such as OPT or the UK Graduate visa, which an Indian MTech does not give. A GATE score can also stand in for the GRE for TUM’s MSc in Informatics.

Is Ireland worth considering?

For a shorter route, yes. A one-year master’s in Ireland costs about ₹24 to 38 lakh, and graduates of a master’s get 12 months to stay and work, renewable for a further 12. Our cheapest countries guide compares it with the low-cost European options.

What do you need to apply for an MS abroad?

Most programmes ask for your BTech transcripts and degree certificate, a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, a CV, an English test score and, where the programme asks, the GRE. The number of letters and the minimum scores differ by programme, so take them from each course page. Our IELTS or PTE guide helps you pick the English test, and our percentage guide shows which marks programmes accept.

When should you apply for an MS in autumn 2027?

  • October and November 2026: finalise the shortlist, take the GRE if your programmes want it and an English test, and draft your statement of purpose.
  • November 2026 to February 2027: submit US applications, starting with the November and December deadlines above.
  • From October 2026: apply to UK courses. Deadlines vary by course and popular courses can fill early, so earlier is safer.
  • For Germany: deadlines differ by programme, so check each one and start the APS certificate early.
  • Spring 2027: compare offers, arrange funding and a loan if needed, and apply for the visa.

Our SOP guide, our guide to studying without IELTS and our education loan guide cover the next steps.

Questions students ask us

Which country is best for an MS after BTech?

It depends on budget and plans. Germany is the cheapest two-year option, at about ₹27 lakh at a public university. The USA costs about ₹85 lakh but gives STEM graduates up to three years of work. The UK and Ireland are quickest, at one year. Canada and Australia give three years of post-study work.

Is the GRE required for an MS in the USA for 2027?

Often not. Georgia Tech's MSCS, Illinois's Siebel School, Purdue ECE, Northeastern's Khoury College and UC San Diego CSE do not require it, and Berkeley EECS no longer accepts it for research programmes. Carnegie Mellon strongly recommends it for its MSCS. Policies differ even within one university, so check each programme page.

Can I do an MS in Germany for free after BTech?

At some public universities, nearly. RWTH Aachen charges no tuition to students from outside the EU, only the semester fee, but TUM charges new non-EU students, usually €4,000 or €6,000 a semester for a master's. You still need €11,904 a year for living costs in a blocked account (the 2026 figure).

Can I do an MS in computer science after a mechanical or civil BTech?

Yes. In the UK, conversion master's courses are open to other branches; Birmingham's MSc in Computer Science asks for a 2:1 in any subject other than computing. In the USA, check each programme's prerequisites. STEM eligibility depends on your US degree's code, and civil and mechanical engineering are on the list.

How much does an MS abroad cost after BTech?

Roughly ₹27 lakh for two years at a German public university, ₹24 to 38 lakh for a one-year Irish master's, ₹50 lakh for a one-year UK MSc, ₹55 to 68 lakh for a Canadian MEng, ₹85 lakh for a US public MS and nearly ₹1 crore for two years in Australia, before flights.

Is an MEng or an MASc better in Canada?

It depends on your goal. At the University of Toronto, the MEng is course-based and self-funded, with optional co-op or practicum, while the MASc is research-intensive, often a stepping stone to a PhD, and pays at least C$20,000 a year for two years after tuition and fees. MASc admission is competitive.

How long can I work in the USA after an MS?

Twelve months of OPT, plus a 24-month STEM extension if your degree is on the DHS STEM list, which includes computer science, electrical and electronics engineering and mechanical engineering. That gives up to three years. Staying beyond that needs a work visa such as the H-1B, now weighted towards higher-paid jobs.

Should I do an MS abroad or an MTech through GATE?

If your career is in India, an MTech through GATE is usually far cheaper and well regarded. If you want to work abroad, an MS abroad comes with the right to stay and work there after graduating. GATE 2027 runs in February 2027, and late registration closes on 12 October 2026.
