How much percentage is required to study abroad? What 50%, 55%, 60% and 65% can get you

Short answer
There is no single cut-off. For a master's, universities that publish a figure for Indian applicants mostly ask for 50% to 70% in your bachelor's, depending on the country, course and the institution that awarded your degree. Several UK and US universities accept 50% to 55%, while Canadian universities usually want a first class, around 65%.
In our work with Chennai families, the percentage is usually the first question, often before a country is chosen. It is a fair worry. There is no single cut-off, and a mark in the mid-50s still meets the published requirement at several UK and US universities.
I work through applications with students from Chennai every intake. This guide sets out what universities themselves publish for Indian applicants, country by country, and what a 50%, 55%, 60% or 65% can get you. Each requirement was checked on the university’s own page on 30 September 2026 and links to it. Requirements vary by course and change each year, so treat these as examples, not a promise.
How much percentage is required to study abroad?
For a master’s, most universities that publish a figure for Indian applicants ask for somewhere between 50% and 70% in your bachelor’s degree. The exact number depends on the country, the university, the course and often the Indian university that awarded your degree. Several UK and US universities publish figures from 50%, and the Australian National University from 45% for some Indian institutions; Canadian universities and competitive German programmes ask for more. The lowest minimum for a master’s we found published was 45%, at ANU for some Indian institutions, and 50% at several UK and US universities.
| Country | What universities publish | Example |
|---|---|---|
| UK | Around 50% to 70%, depending on the university and your institution | Birmingham: 50% to 55% for a 2:2 |
| USA | Often a B average, which some translate to 50% to 55% | Illinois: B average, 55% |
| Australia | Varies by the Indian institution | ANU: 45% or 60% at its lowest band, by institution |
| Ireland | A first class normally; high second class from some top Indian universities | University College Cork: 65% for a 2H1, 55% for a 2H2 |
| Canada | Universities: usually a first class | UBC: 65%; Windsor: 70% generally |
| Germany | A converted grade; competitive programmes ask for 2.5 or better | A Göttingen master’s: 2.5 or better |
What can you do with 50%, 55%, 60% or 65%?
Using only the requirements universities publish, this is roughly where each band puts you. The course page can always ask for more.
| Your mark | UK | USA | Canada, Ireland and Australia |
|---|---|---|---|
| 65% or more | A 2:1 at Birmingham (for most institutions), Surrey and Oxford Brookes, and at Queen Mary for some institutions | Above both US minimums quoted in this guide | The first class UBC and Simon Fraser ask for (UBC takes a three-year degree only from a NAAC A institution); a 2H1 at University College Cork |
| 60% to 64% | A 2:1 at Birmingham for most institutions, at Surrey or Oxford Brookes for some, and at the lower end of Queen Mary’s range; Coventry’s three-year threshold | An A on San Francisco State’s conversion; above Illinois’s 55% minimum | ANU’s GPA 5.0 band for two of its three sections; Simon Fraser’s first class if your university sets it at 60% |
| 55% to 59% | A 2:1 at Birmingham or Oxford Brookes for some institutions; a 2:2 at Surrey for some; Coventry’s four-year threshold | Illinois’s B average; a B+ on San Francisco State’s conversion | ANU’s GPA 5.0 band for its first section |
| 50% to 54% | A 2:2 at Birmingham, Queen Mary or Oxford Brookes for some institutions | A B on San Francisco State’s conversion | ANU’s GPA 4.5 band for its first section and its lowest band for two of its three sections; a Canadian college graduate certificate, where no percentage is stated |
| Below 50% | Oxford Brookes’s pre-master’s, which asks for a 40% pass | Not among the minimums in this guide | ANU’s lowest band, at 45%, for two of its three sections |
What percentage do UK universities ask for?
UK universities describe entry in degree classes: a 2:1 (upper second class, the level most UK master’s ask for) or a 2:2 (lower second, the next band down). Many publish what those mean for Indian degrees, and several set a lower figure for graduates of institutions they rate more highly.
| University | Equivalent of a 2:1 | Equivalent of a 2:2 |
|---|---|---|
| University of Birmingham | 55% to 60% or higher | 50% to 55% |
| Queen Mary University of London | 60% to 70% | 50% to 60% |
| University of Surrey | 60% or 65% | 55% or 60% |
| Oxford Brookes University | 55%, 60% or 65% | 50%, 55% or 60% |
In each case the figure depends on the Indian institution that awarded your degree. Coventry publishes a threshold that does not vary by institution: 60% in a three-year degree or 55% in a four-year degree. Oxford Brookes also offers a pre-master’s, a preparation course that leads on to the master’s, for which it asks for a pass of 40%. Our UK page covers fees and visas.
Does your college affect the percentage you need?
Often, yes. Many universities abroad set different cut-offs for different Indian institutions. Oxford Brookes groups them into three bands, from Institutes of National Importance such as the IITs to private and deemed universities, and asks for 55%, 60% or 65% for a 2:1 accordingly. The Australian National University does the same with three sections. University College Cork says Indian applicants normally need a first class, but that graduates of top universities such as the University of Mumbai, University of Delhi, University of Calcutta and the University of Pune may be accepted with high second class marks. If a page gives a range, ask the university which figure applies to your college.
Can you do a master’s abroad with a three-year degree?
Yes, at many universities, though some ask for more. Coventry asks for 60% in a three-year degree against 55% in a four-year one. The University of Illinois accepts both. San Francisco State asks three-year graduates to hold a postgraduate diploma or master’s as well, and UBC accepts a three-year degree only with a first class from an institution rated A by NAAC, India’s national accreditation body. If you have a BCom, BSc or BA, check this line on each page first.
What if your marksheet shows a CGPA, not a percentage?
Several universities accept a 10-point CGPA directly: Illinois, UBC and Simon Fraser all list 8 out of 10 alongside their percentage. Where a university asks for a percentage, use the conversion your own university publishes or certifies rather than an online calculator. Many pages do not say whether they read your final-year marks or your overall aggregate, so ask.
What percentage do US universities ask for?
Many US graduate schools ask for a B average, and some publish what that means for Indian degrees. The University of Illinois Graduate College lists a B average as 55%, 8 out of 10 or second class upper. San Francisco State requires a B or higher and converts 60% and above as an A, 55% to 59% as a B+ and 50% to 54% as a B. These are minimums: competitive programmes admit students well above them. Our USA page covers costs and the visa.
What percentage do Canadian universities and colleges ask for?
Of the universities checked here, the Canadian ones ask for the most. UBC asks for First Class, Division 1 (65%), or 8 on a 10-point scale, which is higher than the 60% many Indian universities use for a first class. Simon Fraser also asks for First Class, or 8 on a 10-point scale, and the University of Windsor sets a general minimum of 70% for master’s programmes.
Colleges are more open. For a graduate certificate, a postgraduate college qualification rather than a master’s degree, Seneca and St. Clair College ask for a university degree, college diploma or equivalent, with no minimum percentage stated on their admission pages. Our Canada page covers the study permit and work rights.
What percentage do Australian universities ask for?
It depends heavily on your Indian institution. The Australian National University places Indian institutions in three sections and sets its lowest band, a GPA of 4.0 on its 7-point scale, at 45%, 45% or 60% depending on the section, rising to 55%, 60% or 70% for a GPA of 5.0. ANU adds that meeting the requirements does not guarantee entry. UNSW’s guide to Indian results notes that a first class is usually 60%, and invites you to apply if you are within 5% of a programme’s cut-off. Our Australia page covers costs and the visa.
What percentage do you need for a master’s in Germany?
German universities convert your percentage into their own scale, where 1.0 is the best grade and 4.0 a bare pass, using what is called the modified Bavarian formula. Universität Hamburg runs an online converter, and Hochschule Osnabrück publishes the formula: 1 + 3 × (best possible mark − your mark) ÷ (best possible mark − pass mark).
As an illustration, if your university’s pass mark is 40%, then 70% converts to 2.5, 65% to 2.75 and 60% to 3.0. With a pass mark of 35%, 65% converts to about 2.6. That matters because competitive programmes set a limit. One Göttingen master’s says it receives about 1,000 applications a year for 30 places, and advises a grade of at least 2.5. Bayreuth’s Global History master’s asks for 2.5 or better. Limits vary by programme, so check each one. If cost matters as much as marks, see our guide to the cheapest countries to study abroad.
What percentage do Irish universities ask for?
University College Cork lists 55% for a 2H2, 65% for a 2H1 and 75% for a first from an Indian bachelor’s (2H1 and 2H2 are Ireland’s names for a 2:1 and a 2:2), while noting that Indian applicants are normally expected to have a first class, with exceptions for the top universities named above.
What percentage do you need for a bachelor’s abroad after Class 12?
For undergraduate entry, UK universities convert A-level offers into Class 12 percentages. The University of Birmingham asks for 85% from ISC or CBSE for an AAA offer, and 75% for ABB or BBB, with higher figures for the boards it lists as “other state boards”; check which group your board falls in. Queen Mary asks for 70% from CBSE or ISC for a BBB offer and considers students with 60% to 80% for its International Foundation Year. Coventry asks for an overall score of 60% minimum in the Standard XII examination.
How many backlogs are accepted to study abroad?
None of the official India entry pages we checked for this guide states a limit on backlogs, and the lists online of how many backlogs each university “accepts” are not backed by any of those pages. Submit transcripts showing every attempt, declare them honestly in your application, and if backlogs worry you, ask the admissions team of each university directly before you pay an application fee.
How can you improve your chances with a lower percentage?
- Apply where your mark fits the published requirement, and check which institution band your college falls into.
- Look at routes built for lower marks, such as a pre-master’s course in the UK or a graduate certificate in Canada.
- Write a specific statement. Where a university reads the whole application, a clear account of what you have done since your degree helps. Our SOP guide explains how.
- Remove other barriers. If your English test is the worry rather than your marks, see studying abroad without IELTS.
- Ask before you pay. Admissions teams will usually tell you whether your mark is within range.
Can we check your percentage for you?
Yes. Bring your marksheets to a free profile evaluation. We will check your percentage against the published requirements of the universities on your list, including the band your college falls into, and build a shortlist where your marks fit. Our course selection service takes it from there.
