Short answer

Yes, for most subjects. Under the 2022 India–UK agreement on mutual recognition, a UK master’s, including a one-year one, is equivalent or comparable to an Indian master’s. Professional degrees in engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law and architecture are excluded. It generally qualifies for PhD admission and UGC-NET with 55%; UGC equivalence helps for NET and government posts.

“Will a one-year master’s from the UK be accepted back home?” is one of the first questions parents in Chennai ask us, and until 2022 the answer was often no. Indian universities and government employers were wary of a master’s that took twelve months when an Indian one took two. The UK government even listed it as a trade barrier: India “did not recognise one-year masters programmes offered by UK universities” for civil service jobs or PhD admission.

That changed in 2022, when India and the UK signed an agreement on recognising each other’s degrees. This guide explains what it covers, which degrees it leaves out, whether you need an equivalence certificate, and what it means for PhD admission, UGC-NET and government jobs, with each point linked to the official text.

Is a one-year UK master’s valid in India?

Yes, for most subjects. Under the India–UK Memorandum of Understanding on mutual recognition of academic qualifications, a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree awarded in the UK “will be considered equivalent or comparable to the Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctoral degree respectively awarded in the Republic of India”. The text sets no minimum length, and India’s Cabinet note on the agreement says it followed “the request from UK side to grant recognition to their One Year Masters Programme”. The UK government now lists the old trade barrier as resolved.

Recognition has the same effect as an Indian degree: the agreement says it “will have the effects granted by each participant to its own degrees, subject to the applicable legislation”. It also covers degrees awarded by UK universities’ branch campuses, and lasts five years at a time, renewing automatically.

Which UK degrees does the India–UK agreement not cover?

The agreement leaves out regulated professional degrees: “Professional degrees in the fields of Engineering, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Law, and Architecture are out of scope of this MoU.” India’s Cabinet release adds paramedical education to the list. These degrees are governed in India by their own councils, which set their own rules for foreign qualifications, so check with the relevant council before relying on one.

The agreement does not define which engineering degrees count as “professional”. In our reading, a degree such as an MSc in computer science, data science or management is not a professional engineering degree, but if you need an engineering master’s for a regulated post or an engineering faculty role in India, ask the employer or university how they treat it before you enrol. Management is not on the list, so in our reading a UK MBA or MSc in management is covered. Wholly online degrees are assessed case by case.

Do you need UGC or AIU equivalence for a UK master’s?

Usually not, but it can help. Since April 2025, the University Grants Commission’s regulations on foreign qualifications have set up a UGC equivalence process. They say a student “is not required to apply for grant of equivalence certificate” for a qualification obtained from a foreign institution “under a collaborative arrangement in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding or an agreement” between the Government of India or UGC and that country’s government, and UGC’s portal says such qualifications “may not require a separate equivalence application”. In our reading, that covers a UK degree within the agreement’s scope.

You can still ask UGC for a certificate, and some employers or universities may want one. A certificate is valid for admission to Indian universities and for employment in public or other bodies where a UGC-recognised qualification is specified as essential. Before 2025, equivalence was handled mainly by the Association of Indian Universities, which still accepts applications online; the India–UK agreement names AIU as the body that confirms recognition in India. AIU’s general criteria require a course at least as long as its Indian counterpart, so for a one-year master’s the basis is the India–UK agreement itself. We could not find the fee on either body’s public pages.

How do you get a UGC equivalence certificate?

Register on UGC’s equivalence portal and upload your mark sheets, transcripts and degree certificate. If a document is not in English or a scheduled Indian language, the regulations ask for an English transcript authenticated by the university. UGC must decide within fifteen working days, though it can ask for more documents. For a qualification under a government agreement, it can grant the certificate “on payment of specified fee without reference to the Standing Committee”, its expert panel. If you are refused, you can ask for a review within thirty working days.

Are UK degrees from partner or franchised colleges recognised?

Check this before you enrol. UGC’s 2025 regulations say a qualification obtained through a franchising arrangement “shall not be considered for recognition” for equivalence, and they define franchising as letting someone other than the institution award the degree. In the UK, “franchised” often means a course taught by a partner college but awarded by the university itself; in our reading, that is not franchising as UGC defines it. Courses taught outside the UK are different: the India–UK agreement covers quality-assured branch campuses, but other transnational arrangements are “evaluated on a case-by-case basis”. If your course is taught at a partner college, ask the university in writing who awards the degree and what the certificate will say.

Can you do a PhD in India with a one-year UK master’s?

Yes, if you meet the marks and the university’s own rules. UGC’s PhD regulations accept “a 1-year/2-semester master’s degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme”, with at least 55% (a 5% relaxation is allowed for reserved categories), or an equivalent qualification from a foreign institution accredited by a recognised quality agency in its home country. India’s own system now has one-year master’s degrees too: UGC’s 2025 degree rules let universities offer a one-year postgraduate programme to students with a four-year bachelor’s.

If you went to the UK after a three-year bachelor’s, your route rests on the agreement treating the UK master’s as equivalent to an Indian one. Each university sets its own PhD admission rules, so check the notice of the university you are applying to, and keep a UGC equivalence certificate if it asks for one.

Can you take UGC-NET with a UK master’s?

Generally, yes. UGC-NET asks general and EWS candidates for at least 55%, and OBC (non-creamy layer), SC, ST, PwD and third-gender candidates for 50%, in a “Master’s Degree or equivalent examination”, and in our reading a UK master’s within the agreement counts as equivalent. The December 2026 information bulletin, like earlier ones, advises candidates with a foreign qualification to obtain equivalence from UGC “in their own interest”, so apply for the certificate as early as you can; candidature is provisional and NTA can check eligibility at any stage. In our experience, many UK master’s courses set the pass mark at 50%, so a pass alone may not meet the threshold. Neither the agreement nor UGC’s regulations convert UK grades into Indian percentages, so the university or NTA decides how to read your transcript.

Is a UK master’s valid for government jobs in India?

Generally, yes. Central government has long treated foreign qualifications recognised by AIU as recognised for “employment to post and services under the Central Government”, and AIU is the body the India–UK agreement names to confirm recognition in India. UGC’s 2025 regulations add that its equivalence certificate is valid for employment in all public or other bodies where a UGC-recognised qualification is specified as essential. The UPSC civil services exam needs only a graduate degree “or … an equivalent qualification”, so a master’s is not the deciding factor there.

State public service commissions and individual recruiters set their own rules, and we have not checked them all. If a government post lists a master’s as essential, apply for UGC equivalence early and keep the certificate with your degree.

Do private companies in India accept a one-year UK master’s?

There is no legal rule for private employers. In our experience, Indian companies look at the university, the subject and what you can do, not the length of the course, and a one-year UK master’s is common on CVs in IT, analytics, finance and consulting. Some employers ask for the degree certificate and transcript, so keep the originals safe.

Is a UK bachelor’s or PhD valid in India?

Yes, on the same terms. The agreement covers UK bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, with the same professional exclusions. It also says UK school qualifications that meet UK university entry requirements are suitable for entry to Indian universities, subject to each institution’s own criteria.

Is an Indian degree valid in the UK?

Yes. The agreement works both ways: an Indian bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate “will be considered equivalent or comparable” to the UK award, and in the UK, UK ENIC confirms recognition. Each UK university still sets its own entry grades, so recognition does not guarantee admission; our guide to the percentage you need covers them.

What about UK universities’ campuses in India?

Degrees from them are recognised without any further step. UGC’s 2023 rules for foreign university campuses say their qualifications “shall be equivalent to any corresponding degree awarded by the Indian Higher Educational Institution for all purposes”, with no further equivalence needed. The University of Southampton opened the first such campus, in Gurugram, in 2025, and in June 2026 the Ministry of Education announced approvals for Bristol and York in Mumbai. By August 2026, UGC had issued 16 letters of intent to 15 foreign universities.

Questions students ask us

Is a one-year master’s from the UK valid in India?

Yes, for most subjects. The 2022 India–UK agreement on mutual recognition of academic qualifications treats a UK master’s as equivalent or comparable to an Indian master’s, with no minimum course length. India’s Cabinet said it followed the UK’s request to recognise its one-year master’s. Professional degrees such as engineering, medicine and law are excluded.

Which UK degrees are not recognised under the India–UK agreement?

Professional degrees in engineering, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, law and architecture are outside its scope, and India’s Cabinet release adds paramedical education. Each is regulated in India by its own council, which sets its own rules for foreign qualifications. Wholly online degrees are assessed case by case rather than recognised automatically.

Do I need a UGC or AIU equivalence certificate for a UK master’s?

Usually not. UGC’s 2025 regulations say a student is not required to apply for equivalence for a qualification obtained under a government-level agreement, which in our reading covers UK degrees within its scope. A UGC certificate is still available and is worth getting for UGC-NET or a government post that needs a master’s.

How do I get a UGC equivalence certificate for a UK degree?

Apply on UGC’s equivalence portal with your mark sheets, transcripts and degree certificate. UGC’s 2025 regulations say it must decide within fifteen working days, though it can ask for more documents. For qualifications under a government agreement, it can grant the certificate on payment of the fee without referring it to its expert committee.

Is a UK degree from a franchised or partner college valid in India?

Usually, if the UK university awards the degree. UGC’s 2025 regulations exclude qualifications obtained through franchising, which they define as someone other than the institution awarding the degree. In our reading, a UK university’s own degree taught at a partner college is not caught. Courses outside the UK are assessed case by case, so confirm the awarding body first.

Can I do a PhD in India after a one-year UK master’s?

Yes, subject to the marks and the university’s rules. UGC’s PhD regulations accept a one-year master’s after a four-year bachelor’s with at least 55%, or an equivalent foreign qualification, and allow a 5% relaxation for reserved categories. After a three-year bachelor’s, admission rests on the agreement’s equivalence, so check the university’s notice and keep a UGC certificate.

Is a UK master’s valid for UGC-NET?

Generally, yes. UGC-NET asks for at least 55% in a master’s degree or equivalent, and in our reading a UK master’s within the India–UK agreement counts as equivalent. The December 2026 bulletin, like earlier ones, advises candidates with foreign qualifications to get equivalence from UGC in their own interest, so apply for it early.

Is a UK master’s accepted for government jobs in India?

Generally, yes. Central government has long treated foreign qualifications recognised by AIU as recognised for its posts, and AIU is the body the India–UK agreement names to confirm recognition. A UGC equivalence certificate is also valid for public employment where a recognised qualification is essential. State commissions set their own rules, so get UGC equivalence early.

Do Indian companies accept a one-year UK master’s?

There is no legal rule for private employers. In our experience, Indian companies look at the university, the subject and your skills rather than the length of the course, and one-year UK master’s degrees are common in IT, analytics, finance and consulting. Keep your degree certificate and transcript, as some employers ask for them.

Is an Indian degree valid in the UK?

Yes, under the same 2022 agreement, which works both ways. An Indian bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate is considered equivalent or comparable to the UK award, and UK ENIC confirms recognition in the UK. Each UK university still sets its own entry requirements, so a recognised degree does not guarantee admission.

Are degrees from UK university campuses in India valid?

Yes. UGC’s 2023 regulations for foreign university campuses say their degrees are equivalent to corresponding Indian degrees for all purposes, including higher education and employment, with no further equivalence needed. Southampton opened in Gurugram in 2025, and Bristol and York received approval for Mumbai campuses in June 2026.
