Education loan for study abroad, from Chennai

A sanctioned loan is a visa document before it is a funding arrangement. We compare lenders on the terms that actually matter, then make sure the letter is written in a form the visa officer will accept.

The short answer

We help families in Chennai and across Tamil Nadu get an education loan for study abroad sanctioned on time and in a form the visa officer accepts. We compare public banks, private banks and NBFCs on rate, margin money and collateral, prepare the file, and chase the branch. The service is free to you.

Why do education loans go wrong?

Families usually approach the bank they already use and accept the first offer. Rates, margin money and processing fees differ noticeably between lenders, and on a loan of twenty lakh or more over ten years that difference is substantial.

Worse, a sanction letter that is conditional on collateral being registered will not satisfy a visa officer, and the refusal comes long after the money question felt settled.

How much education loan can you get without collateral?

Up to ₹7.5 lakh can be lent without collateral or a third-party guarantee under the government’s Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans, for loans made under the IBA model education loan scheme by member banks.

Above that, most public-sector banks ask for collateral, usually property or fixed deposits. Some private banks and NBFCs lend larger amounts unsecured for universities and courses they rate highly, generally at a higher rate. Which of these you qualify for depends on the university, the course and your co-applicant’s income more than on your marks.

Which loan letter will a visa officer accept?

The UK, Canada and Australia all accept an education loan as financial evidence. GOV.UK asks for evidence from the loan company itself; IRCC lists proof of a student or education loan from a bank; Home Affairs accepts loans from a financial institution.

What trips families up is the wording and the timing. A letter that names the wrong university or amount, or that is still conditional on collateral registration, is the one we see questioned. We read the sanction against the visa rule for your country before you rely on it.

Does a loan change the tax on money you send abroad?

Yes. Tax collected at source on remittances for education was revised in both the 2025 and 2026 Union Budgets, and money sent from an education loan taken from a financial institution is treated more favourably than self-funded transfers.

Rates and thresholds move, so ask the remitting bank for the current position before each transfer, and keep the TCS certificate: it is credited against your income tax.

What we do, and what you do

We

  • Work out how much to borrow, and how much is better paid from savings.
  • Shortlist two or three lenders that fit your collateral and co-applicant income.
  • Give you a document checklist for your lender and check everything before it goes in.
  • Track the valuation and legal check, which is usually the slowest step.
  • Read the sanction letter line by line against your visa’s financial rule.
  • Time disbursements to the university’s fee deadlines.

You

  • Collect the co-applicant’s income documents and the property papers.
  • Visit the branch for KYC, signatures and the valuation visit.
  • Pay any processing, valuation or legal fees directly to the lender.
  • Choose the lender. We compare; the decision is yours.

How long does an education loan take?

  1. When you have a shortlist

Funding review and lender shortlist, so nothing starts from zero when the offer arrives.

  2. When the first offer arrives

Apply with the offer letter and fee structure. Valuation and legal checks on collateral begin.

  3. Two to six weeks later

Sanction, if the file was complete. Collateral loans take longer than unsecured ones.

  4. Before the visa

Sanction letter checked against the visa rule and, for the UK, dated to fit the 28-day window.

  5. Before each fee deadline

Disbursement, usually straight to the university.

How it runs

  1. Funding review

What you have, what you need, and how much should be borrowed rather than liquidated.

  2. Lender shortlist

Two or three lenders matched to your collateral position and co-applicant income.

  3. Application and valuation

Filed with the branch, with the property valuation and legal check tracked.

  4. Sanction in hand

The letter checked line by line against what the visa file requires.

Which documents will you need?

Student

  • Offer letter and the university’s fee structure or cost of attendance
  • Class X, XII and degree marksheets
  • Test scores (IELTS, PTE, GRE) where you have them
  • Passport, PAN and Aadhaar
  • Photographs

Co-applicant (usually a parent)

  • PAN and Aadhaar
  • Salary slips, or income-tax returns for recent years if self-employed
  • Bank statements for the last six months

Collateral, if required

  • Sale deed or title documents
  • Encumbrance certificate
  • Approved building plan and property-tax receipts
  • Or fixed-deposit receipts or insurance policies being pledged

Mistakes we see most often

Going only to the family bank

It may be the right lender. It is rarely the only one worth asking.

Starting after the offer is firm

Property valuation and legal checks take weeks. Start the paperwork when the shortlist is done.

A sanction in the wrong form

Conditional wording, the wrong university or the wrong amount can each undo the visa file.

Forgetting the interest during study

On most loans interest runs during the course and moratorium. Paying it as you go shrinks the final bill.

Borrowing everything, or nothing

Liquidating the deposit you could have pledged as collateral can cost you the better loan.
