Short answer
SBI lends up to ₹7.5 lakh for study abroad under its Student Loan Scheme and up to ₹3 crore under Global Ed-Vantage. Published rates run from 8.90 to 9.90 per cent, and should rise by 0.25 points after the RBI’s October 2026 repo rise. Loans up to ₹50 lakh need no collateral at 100 listed universities.
SBI has two schemes for students going abroad: the Student Loan Scheme for up to ₹7.5 lakh, and Global Ed-Vantage for anything above that, up to ₹3 crore. Its published rates run from 8.90 to 9.90 per cent. They are about to change: the Reserve Bank raised the repo rate on 7 October 2026, and SBI’s education loan rates are tied to it.
SBI, RBI and tax figures below link to their source and were checked on 13 October 2026; the expected new rates and the EMIs are our arithmetic from SBI’s own formula.
What is SBI’s education loan interest rate for abroad studies in 2026?
SBI’s education loan rates for study abroad run from 8.90 to 9.90 per cent on its table effective from 9 June 2026, and should rise by 0.25 points after the RBI’s October repo rise. The rate depends on the scheme, whether you offer collateral, and whether your university is on SBI’s list of select institutions. All of them are linked to SBI’s external benchmark rate and floating for the entire period of the loan.
| Loan | Published rate | Expected after the October rise |
|---|---|---|
| Global Ed-Vantage, select institution, with collateral (up to ₹3 crore) | 8.90% | 9.15% |
| Global Ed-Vantage, select institution, without collateral (up to ₹50 lakh) | 9.40% | 9.65% |
| Global Ed-Vantage, any institution, with collateral (up to ₹3 crore) | 9.40% | 9.65% |
| Student Loan Scheme, without collateral (up to ₹7.5 lakh) | 9.90% | 10.15% |
Girl students get 0.50 per cent off the Student Loan Scheme rate and the Global Ed-Vantage rate for any institution with collateral. SBI gives no additional concession for girl students on the select-institution rates, which are already lower.
Why is SBI’s rate about to rise?
SBI’s rate page spells out the formula: its external benchmark rate (EBR) is the RBI’s repo rate plus a spread, and currently the repo rate is 5.25%, the spread 2.65% and the EBR 7.90%. Each education loan rate is that EBR plus a number of points SBI sets for the scheme, between 1.00 and 2.00 at today’s rates. On 7 October 2026 the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee voted unanimously to increase the policy repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50 per cent; 25 basis points is 0.25 per cent. By SBI’s own formula the EBR becomes 8.15 per cent, and every rate above rises by 0.25 points. When we checked on 13 October, SBI had not yet published the new rates, so confirm on its rate page before you sign. Because the rate floats, it also moves for existing borrowers whenever the repo rate does, and the RBI said that rate cuts are off the table in the near term.
Which SBI scheme is for studying abroad?
SBI has two schemes for study abroad: the Student Loan Scheme, up to ₹7.5 lakh, and Global Ed-Vantage, above ₹7.5 lakh and up to ₹3 crore. A master’s abroad almost always costs more than ₹7.5 lakh, so most families apply under Global Ed-Vantage.
| Feature | Student Loan Scheme | Global Ed-Vantage |
|---|---|---|
| Loan amount abroad | Up to ₹7.5 lakh | Above ₹7.5 lakh, up to ₹3 crore |
| Security | Parent or guardian as co-borrower; no collateral or third-party guarantee | Tangible collateral, or none up to ₹50 lakh at select institutions |
| Family’s share (margin) | 15% on loans above ₹4 lakh; none up to ₹4 lakh | 10% in SBI’s terms; scholarships count towards it |
| Processing fee | Nil up to ₹10 lakh | 0.50% of the loan, ₹10,000 to ₹50,000, plus GST |
| Repayment starts | One year after the course (scheme page) | Six months after the course |
| Repayment period | Up to 15 years | Up to 15 years |
The margin is the share of the total cost the family pays itself. For Global Ed-Vantage the live page does not print a percentage; SBI’s November 2024 terms for the scheme put it at 10%, brought in as each disbursement is made, with any scholarship or assistantship counted towards it. For the Student Loan Scheme, SBI’s scheme page says repayment starts one year after the course, but its repayment page says six months for study-abroad loans. Ask for the date to be written into your sanction letter.
What does an SBI education loan cover?
Fees, travel and course costs, and living costs if you ask for them. Global Ed-Vantage lists fees payable to the college and hostel, examination, library and laboratory fees, travel to the university, and the premium for a life or credit life policy assigned to the bank (insurance that repays the loan if the borrower dies). Two items are capped: books, equipment and a computer at 20 per cent of the total tuition, and a caution deposit at 10 per cent of the tuition. Living costs are not on that list, but SBI’s terms provide for remitting living expenses, so ask for them to be included in the sanction rather than assume they are.
How much can you borrow from SBI for an MS in the USA?
SBI lends the course’s total cost less your margin, up to ₹3 crore. Our MS in the USA cost guide puts two years at Texas A&M, which is on SBI’s list, at about ₹79 lakh; less a 10 per cent margin, that supports a loan of about ₹71 lakh. That is above the ₹50 lakh collateral-free limit, so even at a listed university the family either pledges property for the larger loan or pays the difference itself. A one-year UK master’s outside London costs about ₹45 to 65 lakh, a loan of about ₹40 to 58 lakh after the margin, so cheaper courses at listed universities fit under ₹50 lakh and dearer ones, such as Leeds at about ₹64 lakh, do not.
Can you get an SBI education loan for abroad without collateral?
Yes, in two cases. Any student can borrow up to ₹7.5 lakh under the Student Loan Scheme with only a parent or guardian as co-borrower, and no collateral or third-party guarantee. Above that, Global Ed-Vantage lends up to ₹50 lakh without collateral for select premier institutions, with a parent or guardian still signing.
Above ₹7.5 lakh, the list decides whether SBI needs property from you. SBI’s revised list of select institutions, in a file dated 5 January 2026, names 100 universities. It includes Texas A&M, Purdue, Georgia Tech and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the USA; Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow in the UK; Monash and UNSW in Australia; and TU Munich and LMU Munich in Germany. Several common choices for Indian MS students, including Northeastern, Arizona State and UT Dallas, are not on it.
| Country | Institutions on the list |
|---|---|
| USA | 36 |
| UK | 18 |
| Australia | 9 |
| Netherlands | 7 |
| Germany, Hong Kong | 5 each |
| France | 4 |
| Switzerland | 3 |
| Italy, Japan, Singapore, Sweden | 2 each |
| Belgium, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Norway | 1 each |
| Canada, Ireland, UAE | None |
If your parents own no property, SBI also accepts collateral offered by a third party other than the parents, such as a relative. Our guide to education loans without collateral compares the lenders that will go further than SBI.
Can an SBI loan cover a Canada study permit and GIC?
Not without collateral above ₹7.5 lakh, because no Canadian university is on SBI’s list. With collateral, Canada is one of the Global Ed-Vantage countries, and IRCC accepts an education loan from a bank as proof of funds. SBI’s terms say money for living costs may be released before the visa if the visa authority requires it, and SBI’s website lists a Student GIC Program for Canada, so ask the branch whether the sanction can fund the deposit. Our Canada cost guide sets out how much IRCC asks you to show.
Who is eligible for an SBI education loan for abroad studies?
- The student: an Indian national who has secured admission to a foreign university; under Global Ed-Vantage, OCI card holders resident in India qualify too. SBI’s pages state no age limit.
- The course: a regular graduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate or doctorate course in any discipline, in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, 19 other European countries and the UAE. SBI’s terms say courses in other countries may be considered case by case.
- The co-borrower: a parent or guardian, who signs the loan with the student and is equally responsible for repaying it. For a married student, SBI’s terms allow the spouse, the parents or the parents-in-law.
SBI does not publish a minimum credit score. In our experience, the co-borrower’s repayment record matters as much as their income: an old unpaid card or a settled loan on the CIBIL report slows a file down, so pull the report yourself before you apply. SBI’s terms say the loan is generally sanctioned at the branch nearest the family’s permanent address.
What documents does SBI need for an education loan?
SBI’s checklist for education loans asks for these, grouped here by who provides them:
From the student
- The loan application form.
- Passport, which SBI says is mandatory for study abroad, and PAN.
- Mark sheets for Class 10, Class 12, graduation if applicable, and the entrance exam or test result.
- Proof of admission: the offer or admission letter.
- The schedule of expenses for the course, from the university.
- Any scholarship or fee-waiver letter, and a gap certificate if there is a gap in study.
From the co-borrower
- Proof of identity (PAN, passport, driving licence or voter ID) and proof of address.
- If salaried: the latest salary slip or salary certificate, and the latest Form 16 or income tax return.
- If self-employed: business address proof and the latest income tax returns.
- Bank statements for the last six months, for every account.
- For loans above ₹7.5 lakh, an asset and liability statement from each applicant, co-applicant and guarantor.
For collateral
- For property: the sale deed and title documents, for the bank’s legal and valuation checks.
- For movable security: fixed deposits, insurance policies, government securities, SBI mutual fund units or FCNR deposits (foreign-currency deposits held by non-resident Indians).
Our education loan documents checklist covers the Tamil Nadu property papers in detail, why agricultural land usually does not qualify, and what other lenders ask for.
How long does an SBI education loan take?
SBI’s terms set a maximum of 15 working days to decide after a complete application, and at least 15 more working days where outside verification is needed, which, in our experience, usually applies to property-backed loans because of the title search. The clock starts only when every document is in. In our experience the bank’s legal and valuation reports on a property take longest, so start the collateral paperwork as soon as you hold an offer.
Applications go through the government’s PM-Vidyalaxmi portal: the Apply Now button on SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage page links to pmvidyalaxmi.co.in, and SBI’s terms say applications are received through the Vidya Lakshmi or Jan Samarth portal and processed at the branch. The PM-Vidyalaxmi interest subsidy does not apply abroad; only the application route is shared.
Can SBI sanction the loan before the I-20 or visa?
Yes. SBI lists loan sanction or disbursement before the I-20 or visa as a feature of Global Ed-Vantage; the I-20 is the form a US university issues for the student visa. SBI’s terms add that releasing money before the visa may be considered if the university or the visa authority requires it, but the visa must be submitted before the second disbursement. Money then goes directly to the university where possible, in stages, as fees fall due. Fees the family has already paid may be reimbursed if the claim is made within six months of payment.
A sanction letter is accepted as funding evidence by many universities and visa systems, but the rules differ by country. The UK has its own wording for loan letters, Germany wants the blocked account on top of any loan, and US consular officers ask how the course is funded at the F-1 interview. Our proof of funds guide compares them.
What will the EMI be on an SBI education loan?
On ₹40 lakh at 9.40 per cent for a two-year master’s, about ₹63,700 a month over ten years if you let the interest build up, or about ₹51,500 if you pay the interest as you study. Global Ed-Vantage charges simple interest during the course and moratorium, the moratorium being the course plus six months before EMIs start, and adds it to the principal when repayment begins. Paying that interest while you study is optional; SBI’s own terms advise it to reduce the EMI burden, and in this example it cuts the ten-year EMI by about ₹12,100 a month.
| Repayment plan | Monthly payment | Total paid |
|---|---|---|
| Interest left to build up, then 10-year EMI | ₹63,652 | ₹76.4 lakh |
| Interest left to build up, then 15-year EMI | ₹51,287 | ₹92.3 lakh |
| Interest paid during the course (₹31,333 a month), then 10-year EMI | ₹51,540 | ₹71.2 lakh |
| Interest paid during the course, then 15-year EMI | ₹41,528 | ₹84.2 lakh |
This is an illustration, not a quote. It assumes the whole ₹40 lakh is drawn on day one; SBI pays out in stages, so real interest during the course is lower. At 9.65 per cent, the rate expected once the repo rise is passed on, the first row becomes about ₹64,650 a month. The table also shows the effect of the term: when interest is left to build up, a ten-year term costs about ₹16 lakh less than fifteen years. SBI’s repayment page says there are no penalty charges for prepayment, so a graduate earning abroad can clear the loan early. Missed EMIs cost more: SBI’s repayment page sets penal charges of 2.40 per cent a year on the overdue amount for up to 60 days, and 5 per cent a year beyond that.
Do you pay TCS or get a tax benefit on an SBI education loan?
Fees sent abroad from an SBI loan carry no TCS: the tax is not collected when the remittance is a loan from a financial institution, taken for education. The interest is deductible for eight years with no upper limit under section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, formerly 80E, but only by the person who took the loan, for their own education or a spouse’s, child’s or ward’s, and only on interest paid out of income taxable in India. In practice that is the student or a parent who signs as co-borrower, and the Income Tax Department’s help pages list the deduction under the old tax regime only. Our education loan guide explains TCS on money a family sends from its own savings.
Is there an interest subsidy on SBI loans for abroad studies?
Not from the central government for new applicants. The Padho Pardesh subsidy for minority students was discontinued from 2022-23, banks were told not to accept fresh applications under the Dr. Ambedkar scheme for OBC and EBC students, the central interest subsidy scheme is only for studies in India, and PM-Vidyalaxmi does not cover foreign institutions.
Is SBI the right lender for your study-abroad loan?
Often, if your university is on SBI’s list, which unlocks up to ₹50 lakh without collateral and the lowest rate when you add security, or if your family has property to pledge. It is a weaker fit when the university is not on the list and there is no collateral, which leaves only the ₹7.5 lakh Student Loan Scheme, or when deadlines are too tight for a property valuation. Against other public banks, SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage starts EMIs sooner, six months after the course against a year at Canara Bank and Indian Bank, which means less interest builds up but less time to find a job, and it asks a lower family share than Indian Bank’s 20 per cent above ₹7.5 lakh. Families from the armed forces should also ask about SBI’s Shaurya Education Loan, listed for defence, Indian Coast Guard and Central Armed Police Force personnel at 8.65 per cent for study abroad, or 8.15 per cent with security at select institutions. Our guide comparing SBI, Canara Bank and Indian Bank sets the three side by side.
Questions students ask us
What is the SBI education loan interest rate for abroad studies in 2026?
SBI’s published rates from 9 June 2026 are 8.90% for a listed university with collateral, 9.40% without collateral or for any university with collateral, and 9.90% under the Student Loan Scheme. The RBI raised the repo rate on 7 October 2026, so expect each rate to rise by 0.25 points once SBI resets its benchmark.
What is the maximum education loan SBI gives for abroad studies?
₹3 crore under Global Ed-Vantage, which covers loans above ₹7.5 lakh. The Student Loan Scheme lends up to ₹7.5 lakh for study abroad. Pages quoting a ₹1.5 crore maximum are out of date. How much you actually get depends on the university’s costs, your margin and the value of any collateral.
Can I get an SBI education loan for abroad without collateral?
Yes, up to ₹7.5 lakh for any university under the Student Loan Scheme, with a parent or guardian as co-borrower. Above that, up to ₹50 lakh without collateral if your university is on SBI’s list of 100 select institutions, dated 5 January 2026. No Canadian university is on that list, so larger Canada loans need collateral.
Which universities are on SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage list?
100 institutions on the list of 5 January 2026: 36 in the USA, 18 in the UK, 9 in Australia, 7 in the Netherlands, 5 each in Germany and Hong Kong, and smaller numbers across Europe, Japan, Singapore and New Zealand. Canada, Ireland and the UAE have none. Check the PDF on SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage page for your university.
What documents are required for an SBI education loan?
The application form, the student’s passport and PAN, Class 10, 12 and degree mark sheets, the admission letter and the university’s schedule of expenses. The co-borrower adds identity and address proof, salary slips or income tax returns, six months of bank statements and an asset and liability statement. Collateral needs the sale deed and title documents.
How much is the SBI processing fee for an education loan abroad?
Under Global Ed-Vantage, 0.50% of the loan, with a minimum of ₹10,000 and a maximum of ₹50,000, plus GST; on a ₹40 lakh loan that is ₹20,000 plus GST. Under the Student Loan Scheme there is no processing fee up to ₹10 lakh, which covers every study-abroad loan in that scheme.
How much margin money does SBI ask for?
Under the Student Loan Scheme, 15% of the cost on study-abroad loans above ₹4 lakh, and none up to ₹4 lakh. For Global Ed-Vantage, SBI’s terms set the margin at 10%, brought in as disbursements are made, and any scholarship or assistantship counts towards it. The margin is the share of costs the family pays itself.
Can SBI give a loan sanction letter before the I-20 or visa?
Yes. SBI lists sanction and disbursement before the I-20 or visa as a Global Ed-Vantage feature. Its terms say money may be released before the visa if the university or the visa authority requires it, but the visa must be submitted before the second disbursement. Fees are then paid to the university in stages.
When does repayment start on an SBI education loan?
For Global Ed-Vantage, six months after the course ends, with EMIs over up to 15 years. SBI charges simple interest during the course and those six months, added to the principal when repayment starts. Paying that interest while studying is optional but lowers the EMI. SBI says there is no penalty for prepaying the loan.
Do girl students get a lower SBI education loan rate?
Yes, 0.50% off under the Student Loan Scheme and on Global Ed-Vantage loans for any university with collateral, bringing those to 9.40% and 8.90% on the June 2026 table. There is no further concession on the select-institution rates, which are already lower. The discount applies to the floating rate, so it moves with the repo too.
Can I transfer an existing education loan to SBI?
Yes. On its June 2026 table SBI takes over education loans above ₹10 lakh at 9.40% with collateral under both schemes, and at 8.90% to 9.40% for select institutions. Expect each to rise 0.25 points after the October repo increase. It is worth switching only if the saving outweighs SBI’s processing fee.
Is insurance compulsory on an SBI education loan?
SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage terms list the premium for a life or credit life policy assigned to the bank as an expense the loan can cover, but they do not say a policy is compulsory. If the branch asks for one, ask whether it is a condition of sanction and whether the premium can be added to the loan.
