UK January intake 2027 for Indian students: universities, deadlines and whether it is worth waiting

Short answer
Yes, many UK universities offer a January 2027 start for some taught master's courses. Deadlines are early: Birmingham's MSc Computer Science and Liverpool John Moores close on 30 October 2026 for students needing a visa. Many January starters will show funds at the higher rate from 30 November 2026, and the Graduate visa will be 18 months for all.
Every October, students who missed September, or whose plans changed, ask whether January is still possible. For a master’s in the UK, it usually is, but the window is short. Some of the deadlines for January 2027 fall at the end of this month, and the bank balance you must show for the visa rises on 30 November 2026.
We work through applications with students from Chennai every intake. This guide lists universities with a January 2027 start, their fees and deadlines, a dated timeline to January, and a side-by-side comparison with September. Each official statement was checked on its source page on 5 October 2026 and links to it. Rupee figures use £1 ≈ ₹127.
Is there a January intake in the UK in 2027?
Yes, for many taught master’s courses, though not all. Northumbria University says plainly that not all of our courses are available as a January start, and the same is true elsewhere. For undergraduate courses, January starts are rare: UCAS says a few courses start between January and July rather than in September or October. Most of the January courses we found are in computing, data science and business.
Which UK universities offer a January 2027 start?
Birmingham, Liverpool John Moores, Aston, Northumbria, Hertfordshire, Coventry, Greenwich and Teesside all list a January 2027 start for at least some taught master’s. We checked each on the university’s own course page; fees are for international students, for the year each university states.
| University and course | Start and length | International fee | Application deadline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Birmingham, MSc Computer Science (for non-computing graduates) | January 2027, one year | £34,740 (₹44.1 lakh); £36,000 for September 2027 | 30 October 2026 for students needing a visa |
| Liverpool John Moores, several MSc courses | Starts 11 January 2027 | See each course page | 30 October 2026 |
| Aston, MSc Business Analytics | January 2027 (also September and April) | £25,500 (₹32.4 lakh), 2026/27 fee | Not published; closes when full |
| Northumbria, MSc Computer Science (16 months) | January 2027, 16 months | £21,500 (₹27.3 lakh) for the first year, 2026/27 entry | Not published; closes when full |
| Hertfordshire, MSc Data Science and Machine Learning | 18 January 2027 to 31 May 2028 | £19,950 (₹25.3 lakh) for a January (Semester B) start | Not published; closes when full |
| Coventry, MSc Computer Science | January 2027, one of six start dates | £19,500 (₹24.8 lakh) a year | Not published; closes when full |
| Greenwich, MSc Data Science | September or January, one year | £19,450 (₹24.7 lakh), 2026/27 fee | Not published; closes when full |
| Teesside, MSc Computer Science | January start, 16 months including a summer break | £17,000 (₹21.6 lakh) a year, 2026/27 entry | Not published; closes when full |
A course can close once it is full even without a fixed deadline, so apply now rather than at the last minute; Birmingham warns of this even with its 30 October date. Birmingham’s course is a conversion MSc for graduates in subjects other than computing, so B.Tech CSE and IT graduates should look at the others. Where a course runs longer than a year, check whether the fee covers the whole course or only the first year.
What are the deadlines for the January 2027 intake?
The earliest we found are 30 October 2026, for Birmingham’s MSc Computer Science and at Liverpool John Moores, for students needing a visa. They are early because the university has to issue your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the reference number your visa application needs) in time for a decision before January. Liverpool John Moores asks for applications by 30 October, the deposit by 23 November, and aims to issue CAS letters by 30 November, for a course starting on 11 January 2027. If your chosen university has not published a date, treat 30 October as your target and ask its admissions team.
What is the timeline from October 2026 to January 2027?
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| By 30 October 2026 | Applications close for Birmingham’s MSc Computer Science and at Liverpool John Moores, for students needing a visa |
| October, as soon as you have an offer | Apply for ATAS if your course needs it; it takes at least 30 working days |
| Early November | Have the visa funds in your account, so the 28 days can run before a December application (our planning advice) |
| 23 November | Liverpool John Moores deposit deadline |
| 30 November | Liverpool John Moores issues CAS letters by this date; the higher visa funds rate applies to applications made on or after this date |
| Late November to December | TB test at an approved clinic, then the visa application |
| About 3 weeks after applying | Usual visa decision time from outside the UK |
| Up to 1 month before the start | The earliest you can arrive for a course longer than six months |
| 11 January 2027 | Liverpool John Moores January courses start |
How does the visa work for a January start?
- When to apply: the earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts, once you have your CAS.
- How long it takes: GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks if you apply from outside the UK, so leave room before Christmas.
- ATAS: some science and engineering master’s need an ATAS certificate, a UK security clearance for certain subjects, before you apply for the visa. GOV.UK says applications take at least 30 working days (6 weeks) with no fast track, so check your offer letter now.
- When to arrive: up to 1 month before the start for a course longer than 6 months.
- The fee: £558 for the visa, plus the immigration health surcharge; our UK cost guide works them out.
How much money do January 2027 starters need to show?
More than September 2026 starters did. The living-cost amounts rise for any visa application made on or after 30 November 2026, and applications made before that date are decided on the old figures. With CAS letters issued as late as 30 November at Liverpool John Moores, many January starters will apply on or after that date, so plan on the new amounts: £1,203 a month outside London and £1,570 in London, for nine months. That is £10,827 (₹13.75 lakh) outside London or £14,130 (₹17.9 lakh) in London, plus any first-year tuition not yet paid. The full amount must stay in the account for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your application, so for a December application the money needs to be in place by early November. Our UK visa bank balance guide explains how to show it.
What does the January intake mean for the Graduate visa?
Every January 2027 starter will apply for the Graduate visa, the post-study visa that lets you stay and work or look for work after the course, on or after 1 January 2027, so you will get 18 months, not two years: GOV.UK gives 18 months to anyone who applies on or after 1 January 2027. You apply after your university confirms you have completed the course, and before your Student visa expires. This is the same for September 2027 starters, so it is not a reason to choose one intake over the other.
Can you bring your family on a January master’s?
Usually not. Students on taught master’s courses starting on or after 1 January 2024 cannot bring dependants; GOV.UK allows them for a PhD or other doctorate, or a research-based higher degree, or for some government-sponsored students. The intake makes no difference to this.
Is it worth waiting for September instead?
In our experience, January suits students whose profile is ready now: marks, English test and documents in hand, a course that actually starts in January, and funds that can be shown by December. If any of those is missing, September usually gives a stronger application rather than a rushed one.
| January 2027 | September 2027 | |
|---|---|---|
| When you finish | Up to eight months sooner on a 12-month course; about four on a 16-month one | Later, with more time to prepare |
| Choice of courses | Fewer; not every course has a January start | The full range |
| Course length | Some run 16 months, with a summer break | Usually 12 months |
| Fees | Sometimes lower: Birmingham’s CS MSc is £1,260 less in January | The published September fee |
| Deadlines | Some close as early as 30 October 2026 | Months away, so time to improve your profile |
| Visa funds | The rate in force when you apply; many will apply on or after 30 November 2026 | The rate in force when you apply |
| Graduate visa | 18 months | 18 months |
| Scholarships | Check each one | More awards: the Aston and Greenwich awards we saw were for September entry |
A 16-month course matters for your budget. Four extra months at the new visa rate outside London is about £4,812 (₹6.1 lakh) in living costs, rent included. Some scholarships are for September entry only: Aston’s £5,500 award and Greenwich’s international award of up to £3,000 were listed for September 2026 offer holders, so check the January 2027 terms before you count on one.
On the Student visa, degree-level students can usually work up to 20 hours a week in term time, and full time outside term; on a 16-month course, ask whether the summer counts as a vacation or as dissertation time. In our experience, halls are mostly allocated around September arrivals, so ask the accommodation office now whether January starters are offered a room.
What should you do this month for January 2027?
- Check that your exact course has a January start, and note its deadline.
- Apply immediately where the deadline is 30 October 2026, such as Birmingham’s MSc Computer Science and Liverpool John Moores.
- Write a statement specific to each UK course; our UK SOP guide goes through it paragraph by paragraph.
- Have your English test result ready, or check whether your university accepts your Class 12 English instead; our guide to studying without IELTS explains which do.
- Put the funds at the higher rate, or a loan sanction letter, in place by early November; our education loan guide covers the sanction timing.
- Check whether your course needs ATAS, and book the TB test for a December visa application.

Questions students ask us
Is there a January intake in the UK for 2027?
Yes, for many taught master's courses, though not all. Universities including Birmingham, Liverpool John Moores, Aston, Northumbria, Hertfordshire, Coventry, Greenwich and Teesside list January 2027 starts for at least some master's. Undergraduate January starts are rare: UCAS says a few courses start between January and July.
What is the deadline for the UK January 2027 intake?
It varies by university, and many are early. Birmingham's MSc Computer Science closes on 30 October 2026 for students needing a visa, and Liverpool John Moores also closes on 30 October, with the deposit due by 23 November. Some universities close courses once they are full, so apply as early as you can.
Is the January intake worth it, or should I wait for September?
January suits students whose profile is ready now, with marks, an English test and funds in hand, and a course that starts in January. You can finish up to eight months sooner and some fees are lower. September offers more courses, usually 12-month courses and more time to strengthen the application.
How much money do I need to show for a January 2027 UK student visa?
If you apply on or after 30 November 2026, as many January starters will, show £1,203 a month outside London or £1,570 in London for nine months: £10,827 or £14,130, about ₹13.75 or ₹17.9 lakh. Add unpaid first-year tuition, and hold it all for 28 days.
How long is the Graduate visa for January 2027 starters?
Eighteen months. GOV.UK gives 18 months to anyone who applies for the Graduate visa on or after 1 January 2027, and every January 2027 starter will apply after that date. You apply after the university confirms you have completed the course, and before your Student visa expires.
Are January intake master's courses longer?
Some are. Teesside's MSc Computer Science runs 16 months from a January start, including a summer break, and Hertfordshire's MSc Data Science and Machine Learning runs from 18 January 2027 to 31 May 2028. A longer course means more months of rent and living costs, so check the end date.
When should I apply for a UK student visa for January 2027?
As soon as your university issues the CAS; Liverpool John Moores issues them by 30 November. The earliest you can apply is six months before the course starts, and GOV.UK usually decides within three weeks from outside the UK. You can arrive up to a month before a course longer than six months.
Is the January intake cheaper than September?
Sometimes. Birmingham's MSc Computer Science costs £34,740 for January 2027 and £36,000 for September 2027. But a longer January course can cost more in living costs, and some scholarships listed for September may not apply, so compare the full cost, not the fee alone.
