UK student visa documents checklist 2026 for Indian students

Short answer
You need a valid passport and a CAS from your university, plus proof of funds (fees owed and living costs held for 28 days), a TB test certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic, and an ATAS certificate if your course needs one. Translate anything not in English. Indian applicants give fingerprints at a visa application centre.
A UK Student visa application from India rests on a short list of documents, but each one has rules that trip people up: a bank statement a few days too old, a loan letter in a parent’s name, a TB certificate from the wrong clinic. This checklist takes each document in turn, with what it must show and the rule behind it.
Every rule comes from GOV.UK, the Immigration Rules or the Home Office’s guidance to its caseworkers, with practical detail from VFS Global and UK universities, all checked in October 2026. Living cost amounts rise for applications made on or after 30 November 2026, and we give both.
What documents are required for a UK Student visa from India?
GOV.UK lists two documents every applicant “must provide”: a current passport and a CAS from your university. Most Indian students need several more:
| Document | Who needs it | Key rule |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Everyone | Current and valid; you take it to the visa centre |
| CAS reference number | Everyone | Issued no more than 6 months before you apply |
| Proof of funds | Indian applicants | Unpaid fees plus living costs, held for 28 days |
| TB test certificate | Anyone from India staying 6 months or more | From a Home Office-approved clinic, valid 6 months |
| ATAS certificate | Some science and technology courses | Must be in hand before you apply |
| Qualification certificates | Not usually required at universities | Keep those listed on your CAS ready |
| English test certificate | Only if your CAS lists a test | Most universities assess English themselves |
| Sponsor’s consent | If a sponsor paid your fees and living costs in the last 12 months | Written consent for the application |
| Parental consent and birth certificate | Under-18s | Consent from both parents or legal guardians, or one with sole responsibility |
| Certified translations | Any document not in English or Welsh | From a professional translator |
India is not on the list of countries whose nationals can skip financial evidence, so you must provide proof of funds with your application.
What passport do you need?
A current, valid passport. You take it to your visa appointment and, GOV.UK says, “you’ll be able to collect it on the day”. The visa centre’s guidance says UKVI recommends uploading a full copy of your passport, including pages that show your travel history. There is no rule that it must last the whole course; with an eVisa you update your passport in your UKVI account, though not while you are waiting for a decision. If yours expires soon after you travel, renewing before you apply saves a step.
Which CAS details must match your application?
Your name, passport number, date of birth, course and dates should match exactly on your CAS and your visa form, because mismatches can cause delays or a refusal, and the CAS must have been issued no more than six months before you apply. The fees already paid on the CAS reduce the money you must show. Our CAS guide explains what to check and how to get errors fixed before you apply.
Which financial documents do you need?
You must show the course fees still owed, as stated on your CAS, plus living costs for up to nine months: £1,171 a month outside London and £1,529 in London for applications made before 30 November 2026, and £1,203 and £1,570 for applications from that date. The money must be held “for at least 28 days in a row”, and the end of that period must fall within 31 days of the date you apply.
The Home Office accepts these forms of evidence:
- Bank statements, which “can be paper or electronic downloads”, passbooks, certificates of deposit or letters from your bank, showing your name, the bank’s name and the balance.
- Your parents’ account, with “proof of that relationship and written consent from the parent or legal guardian”, usually your birth certificate and a consent letter.
- An education loan letter in your own name. A loan to a parent does not count, even if it is for your studies.
- An official financial sponsor, such as a government or university, confirmed on the CAS or by letter.
The Home Office does not accept overdrafts, cryptocurrency, stocks and shares or pensions, accounts at unregulated banks, or accounts that do not keep electronic records, and it may check the evidence with your bank.
What must a UK visa bank statement or loan letter show?
A statement does not need a bank stamp: the caseworker guidance says it is “not a requirement that electronic bank statements or passbooks must be stamped on each page”. Caseworkers would normally expect it to be on official stationery or an electronic record, and to show the account holder’s name, account number, statement date, the bank’s details and transactions over time. ATM mini statements are not accepted. If a name is spelt differently across your documents, add a document that links the two.
An education loan letter must, under Appendix Finance:
- be dated no more than six months before you apply;
- confirm the loan amount, and that the loan is to you;
- confirm there are no conditions on release other than a successful visa application;
- confirm the money will be available before you travel, or paid to the university before you travel;
- confirm the lender is regulated for student loans in its country.
Goldsmiths, for example, accepts only final disbursement letters, not provisional ones. Our UK visa bank balance guide covers fixed deposits, worked examples in rupees and the common funds mistakes, and our loan documents checklist covers the bank side.
Where can you get a UK visa TB test in Chennai?
You need a TB test if all of these are true: you are coming to the UK for six months or more, you have lived in India for six months or more, and you were living there within the last six months. It must be from a clinic approved by the Home Office, which says it “will not accept a TB test certificate from a clinic we have not approved”, and the certificate is valid for six months from the date of your x-ray. Take the passport you will use for the visa.
| Clinic | Area | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Apollo Hospitals, Apollo Medical Centre | Kotturpuram, Chennai | ₹2,200 |
| Global Emigration Medical Services (GEMS) | Nungambakkam, Chennai | ₹2,200 |
| KG Hospital, KG Specialty Centre and Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) | Coimbatore | ₹1,800 |
The full list of approved clinics in India is on GOV.UK; check it before you book, as clinics are added and removed.
Do you need an ATAS certificate?
Only for certain postgraduate science, engineering and technology courses; your university will tell you. Indian nationals are not exempt, and if your course needs one you must get it before you apply for your visa. ATAS applications take “at least 30 working days (6 weeks)”, with no fast track, so apply as soon as you have an offer.
Do you need your degree certificates and IELTS result?
Not usually. The rules say you must provide the qualifications used to make your offer unless you are studying at degree level or above with a university that has a track record of compliance, which includes most UK universities. Keep the certificates and transcripts listed on your CAS ready anyway; your university and the Home Office can still check them.
For English, most universities assess you themselves and state it on the CAS; GOV.UK says your university “can assess your level of English themselves”, at level B2. If your CAS lists an English test instead, have that certificate.
Do documents need to be translated?
Yes, anything not in English or Welsh. The Home Office wants “a fully certified translation from a professional translator or translation company”, including confirmation that it is accurate, the date, the translator’s full name and signature, and their contact details. This matters for property papers or certificates in Tamil, Hindi or another Indian language.
What extra documents do under-18s and dependants need?
Under-18s need written consent from both parents or legal guardians (or one parent with sole responsibility) covering the visa, living arrangements and travel, plus a birth certificate showing the parents’ names. Dependants are allowed only for PhD or research-based courses and some government-sponsored students, and need a marriage or birth certificate and their own funds.
What happens at the visa application centre?
Indian passports cannot use the UK Immigration: ID Check app, which is open to EU, EEA and Swiss passports and a few others, so you give your fingerprints and photo at a visa application centre. In India these are run by VFS Global in 18 application centres, including Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin and Mumbai, with premium centres in places such as Coimbatore. Chennai is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm. Your photo is taken with your fingerprints, but VFS lists one recent photograph among things you may also need to bring, so carry one.
- Upload your documents yourself when you book, up to the day before your appointment. Otherwise the centre’s paid Document Upload Assistance service scans them for you.
- Bring your appointment confirmation, passport and printed document checklist.
- Using the centre’s upload service? Bring photocopies; VFS says you do not need originals for scanning. Keep your originals, because a caseworker can ask to see them.
How much does the application cost?
| Cost | Amount | In rupees |
|---|---|---|
| Visa fee | £558 | ₹70,900 |
| Immigration health surcharge (16 to 17 months’ leave) | £1,164 | ₹1.48 lakh |
| Total | £1,722 | ₹2.19 lakh |
| TB test in Chennai | Paid locally | ₹2,200 |
The health surcharge is £776 a year for students, and a one-year master’s gives 16 to 17 months of permission (up to a month before the course, the course itself and four months after), which is charged as a year and a half; that £1,164 is our calculation. Faster decisions cost extra, and GOV.UK says you will be told when you apply whether one is available.
How long does it take, and what do you get?
A decision usually takes three weeks from your appointment. If you are approved, you get an eVisa, a digital record linked to a UKVI account, rather than a sticker in your passport, so set up your UKVI account when asked.
In what order should you prepare?
- When you get an offer: check whether your course needs ATAS and apply straight away; renew your passport if needed.
- Before the CAS: put the money in place so 28 days have passed by the time you apply, or get your loan sanctioned.
- When the CAS arrives: check every detail, then book the TB test so the certificate is fresh.
- Within days of applying: download final bank statements, so the latest is within 31 days of the application.
- Apply on GOV.UK, pay the fee and health surcharge, book the visa centre appointment, upload your documents and attend.

- Your parent’s consent letter and your birth certificate, if you use their account.

- TB certificate from an approved clinic, less than six months old.
- ATAS certificate, if your offer or CAS says you need one.

Which document mistakes cause refusals?
Huddersfield says the most common reason is financial evidence, such as not holding the required funds for 28 continuous days, financial documents more than 31 days old, insufficient funds, the wrong format, or using evidence from someone other than a parent. Westminster adds that the balance “cannot drop below the required amount for even one day”, and QMUL warns that a loan in your parents’ name cannot be used.
Never submit a document you have not seen. The UK government warns that “a person found committing visa fraud can receive a 10-year ban on travel to the UK”, and its campaign in Tamil Nadu includes a Tamil-language WhatsApp chatbot on visa scams. VFS says no third party can improve your chances with forged documents. Our UK visa refusal guide covers what to do if it goes wrong.

Questions students ask us
What documents are required for a UK Student visa from India?
A current passport and a CAS from your university, plus proof of funds, because India is not exempt from financial evidence. Most applicants also need a TB test certificate from a Home Office-approved clinic. Some courses need an ATAS certificate, under-18s need parental consent, and anything not in English needs a certified translation.
Do I need passport photos for a UK Student visa?
Usually not. Indian applicants have their photo taken at the visa application centre with their fingerprints, but VFS lists one recent photograph among things you may also need to bring, so carry one. Bring your passport, appointment confirmation and printed document checklist, and upload a full copy of your passport, including pages showing past travel, beforehand.
Do I need original documents at the VFS centre?
No. VFS says you do not need to present originals for scanning, and most applicants upload copies themselves before the appointment. Keep every original safe, though, because the Home Office can ask to see them or check them with your bank, university or TB clinic before it decides.
Can I use my parents’ bank account for a UK Student visa?
Yes. Appendix Finance allows an account in your parent’s or legal guardian’s name if you provide proof of the relationship, usually your birth certificate, and their written consent to use the money. An affidavit on its own is not proof of the relationship. The 28-day rule applies to their account too.
What should an education loan letter say for a UK Student visa?
It must be dated within six months of your application, be in your own name, state the loan amount, confirm there are no conditions on release other than a successful visa, confirm the money will be available before you travel or paid to the university, and confirm the lender is regulated for student loans.
Do bank statements need to be stamped for a UK Student visa?
No. Home Office guidance says it is not a requirement that electronic bank statements or passbooks are stamped on each page. A statement should be on official stationery or an electronic record and show your name, account number, statement date, bank details and transactions over time. ATM mini statements are not accepted.
Where can I get a TB test for a UK visa in Chennai?
At a Home Office-approved clinic. GOV.UK lists Apollo Hospitals’ medical centre in Kotturpuram and Global Emigration Medical Services in Nungambakkam, both ₹2,200 for applicants aged 11 and over. Coimbatore has three approved clinics at ₹1,800. The certificate is valid for six months from the date of your x-ray.
Do I need to submit my degree certificates for a UK Student visa?
Usually not, if you are applying for a degree-level course at a university with a track record of compliance, which includes most UK universities. Keep the certificates and transcripts listed on your CAS ready anyway, because your university and the Home Office can still check them, and translate any that are not in English.
Can I use the UK ID Check app instead of visiting VFS?
Not with an Indian passport. GOV.UK limits the app to EU, EEA and Swiss passports and a few other cases, so Indian applicants give fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre. You can upload documents yourself before the appointment, rather than pay for the centre’s scanning service, and collect your passport the same day.
How much does a UK Student visa cost from India?
The visa fee is £558, about ₹70,900. The immigration health surcharge is £776 a year, which comes to about £1,164 for the 16 to 17 months of permission a one-year master’s gives. Together that is £1,722, about ₹2.19 lakh, plus the TB test and any optional visa centre services.
Do I need to translate documents for a UK Student visa?
Yes, any document not in English or Welsh. The Home Office asks for a fully certified translation from a professional translator or translation company, confirming it is accurate and showing the date, the translator’s full name and signature, and their contact details. This often applies to property papers or certificates in Tamil.
